Convict beaten to death in prison

A scuffle between inmates over lowering the television volume resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man undergoing life imprisonment in a triple murder case in Sangrur jail on Thursday.

A scuffle between inmates over lowering the television volume resulted in the death of a 71-year-old man undergoing life imprisonment in a triple murder case in Sangrur jail on Thursday. The incident allegedly occurred at the prison’s barrack number 2 in which around 45 inmates are lodged.

Bachittar Singh,a resident of Gwara village, was declared dead when he was taken to the Sangrur Civil Hospital. Police registered a case under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Indian Penal Code against Sonu,a resident of Majhi, and Ajit Singh,a resident of Kanganwal village.

According to the police,a fight broke out between Bachittar Singh and the accused after the 71-year-old asked them to either turn off the television set or lower the volume.

Police said the accused attacked Bachittar with fists and kicked him. “Circumstantial evidence and eyewitnesses accounts suggested that Bachittar was hit by the accused in sensitive body organs and that is what likely caused his death. We are awaiting the medical report though,” said Sangrur Deputy Superintendent of Police (Rural) Swaran Singh, who has been entrusted with investigating the case.

“Everything was normal when I took a round of the jail at 1.40 pm. Then at 2.25 pm I got a call that there had been a fight between the inmates. When I reached there,a motionless Bachittar Singh was being taken to hospital,” said Sangrur Jail Superintendent Gurpal Singh.

While one of the accused Sonu is a rape case convict undergoing 10-year-imprisonment,the other Ajit Singh is serving seven years in a dowry death case.

The deceased Bachittar Singh was a convict in a triple murder case and was awarded life imprisonment in October 2002. He had been in the jail since 1999.
