Contraband timber seized in Kufri

Shimla police today intercepted and seized a major illegal timber haul of precious Deodar and Kail species that was being transported in a truck from Theog in upper Shimla area.

Shimla police today intercepted and seized a major illegal timber haul of precious Deodar and Kail species that was being transported in a truck from Theog in upper Shimla area.

When truck number HP 51B 5573 was checked by head constable at Kufri,57 logs of Deodar and Kail were found. Source of the timber was unaccounted and it was being illegally transported out of Shimla,said the police.

The seized wood is assessed to be worth Rs 2.5 lakh.

A case under Indian Forest Act and section 379 IPC is registered at Police Station Dhalli.

The driver and another accomplice in the truck are absconding.

Some of the logs seized by police have marks that are used by State Forest Corporation for salvage felling.

The police suspecting that the wood may have been pilfered from a forest corporation depot.
