The Chandigarh Police arrested a constable on Tuesday for his alleged involvement in several cases of vehicle thefts in the city. Crime Branch sleuths arrested the accused along with two of his accomplices from Sector 34. The officers also impounded a stolen motorcycle, which the accused were riding.
According to sources, constable Amarinder Singh (24),a wireless operator posted in the Industrial Area police station, was riding a Hero Honda Glamour motorcycle. His accomplices,Tejpal Singh (23) and Sukhchain Singh (26),were riding pillion.
The police had set up a checkpost near Sector 34 where they noticed Amarinder and the two others coming on a motorcycle. They signalled the trio to stop to issue a challan for triple riding.
We asked Amarinder for the documents of the motorcycle. He produced a certificate that showed PB04L1240 as its registration number. But the engine and chassis number of the motorcycle did not match with this. We got suspicious and detained them for questioning, said an officer who did not wish to be named.
During investigation, the officers found that a motorcycle with the same chassis and engine number was stolen from Manimajra in January this year. An FIR was registered in this connection on January 14.
The accused have admitted to their involvement in vehicle thefts in the last few months. They claimed to have sold the stolen vehicles in other parts of the region, including Delhi, said the officer.
The accused will be produced in court on Wednesday. The police will seek their remand for the recovery of other stolen vehicles. We will take them to the places where they have sold the vehicles. There may be a few more people involved in the racket. We are investigating the matter and hope to make more recoveries in the coming days, said another officer.
