For the second consecutive day, rains played havoc on major city roads on Thursday. Potholes on streets gave commuters a hard time as even the newly recarpetted roads did not offer a smooth ride.
The city received 54-mm rainfall on Thursday,as compared to 104-mm yesterday, while the temperature remained eight degrees below normal.
Among the worst affected were the slip roads and roundabouts. Roads in Sectors 22,21,27,28,32,33,42 and 46 were also in a bad shape. The road to Panchkula, that was recently recarpetted, has already developed cracks and potholes.
A commuter rued that the roads had become cratered. With submerged roads, the potholes are not visible. Commuting at night has especially become difficult. At certain places, streetlights are also not working. All these factors combined are a perfect recipe for a mishap.
The connecting road to the Chandigarh airport also remained flooded throughout the day.
Though airport authorities made all possible efforts to avoid inconvenience, passengers had a hard time reaching the terminal area due to the ongoing construction work.
Temporary arrangements in the form of a shed also could not provide sufficient cover from the incessant showers.
Construction waste piled along the roadsides obstructed the smooth functioning of the stormwater drainage system at many places.
Several trees were also uprooted which is being blamed on the widening of roads and laying of paver blocks during which roots of trees are surrounded by concrete and they lose ground.
An official said that water plays havoc with the bitumen and this is one of the main reasons why roads get damaged during rains. The roads would be recarpetted once the monsoon season is over,he assured.
The Met department, meanwhile, has predicted showers would continue on Friday as well.
