After the proposal to have all meat sellers slaughter their animals manually in the slaughterhouse failed to take off,the Municipal Corporation (MC) is now considering setting up an automatic poultry processing plant. A committee has been constituted for the purpose of discussing the issue.
The National Meat and Poultry Processing Board (NMPPB) had been asked to quote the consultancy for setting up such a plant. An amount of Rs 34.75 lakh was quoted for 15 visits. For any additional visit,Rs 35,000 will be charged. The cost of the project will be more than Rs 40 crore. The committee has been constituted in order to ascertain whether it would be feasible to set up the project in the city.
Last year, the Municipal Corporation decided to ban slaughtering of animals in shops and ordered that all meat sellers would be required to get the animals slaughtered at the slaughterhouse in Industrial Area. This led to protests among meat sellers who refused to go to the slaughterhouse. The plea being taken was that it requires time to go to the slaughterhouse and then stand in a queue to wait for ones turn. Another plea taken by meat sellers was that customers wanted freshly slaughtered meat which was possible only if they slaughtered animals in their own shops. Consequently, the proposal never took off.
The civic body is now planning to take advise from consultants to know the feasibility of setting up an automatic plant. The consultancy will prepare a report for the project along with architectural and structural drawings, and other services required for running, operation and maintenance of the plant. The consultancy will also prepare the report of the different options available for machinery and equipments required for the plant.
An official said that depending on the decision that the committee constituted for the purpose takes, the consultancy for the project will be hired.
