Protecting the tainted!

FOR reasons best known to the Chandigarh Police,a tainted Sub Inspector who is facing corruption charges continues to be reinstated. His suspension was revoked and he was brought back to service. Last week,a special CBI Court framed charges of corruption and criminal conspiracy against tainted Sub Inspector Sanjiv Kumar. Though Kumar claims to be innocent,it is pertinent to mention here that the highest Court in the country, the Supreme Court, also did not find force in his contentions wherein he had pleaded that the case against him is false. The trial Court, instead, was directed by the Apex Court to proceed with the trial. Now after framing of charges of corruption, whether to allow the Sub Inspector remain in service or suspend him is a question the Chandigarh Police must answer. Sanjiv Kumar was suspended in 2008 but was reinstated in 2011. At present,he is posted as a Sub Inspector in Technical Cell. If rumours are to be believed,a senior Police officer is batting, and also did in the past, for Sanjiv Kumar’s promotion.

Shoddy

THE murder of Traffic Inspector Sucha Singh last week brought to fore certain lapses by Chandigarh Police officials. Firstly,a constable with an armed weapon chose to remain a mute spectator to the murder of the Inspector which took place in front of him. The constable,if not at the accused, could have shot in the air to scare the accused. Secondly, during the pursuit of the vehicle, which the accused snatched away, the police officials kept waiting for orders from their seniors so that they could shoot at the vehicle. And when they finally did (receive orders to shoot and burst the tyres),it was too late. The accused,Basant, fled in village Dhanas with his girlfriend Sarita. Though the Police officials claim that orders were issued to shoot at the vehicle, the fact remains that nobody fired at the vehicle.

Unprecedented enthusiasm

DURING the counting of the recent elections of Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC) the enthusiasm displayed by the supporters of candidates was unprecedented. Supporters thronged the counting centre which even led to traffic jams on the main road of Sector 14. However, some of the supporters even displayed rare daredevilry. Some of them had perched on the trees to get a better view at the counting centre in Sector 14 where a large number of police personnel were deployed for security. Some of the jubilant supporters had been frequently moving out their heads from the rolled down windows of vehicles to shout victory slogans.

Ringing problems

THE councillor of ward 3,Pardeep Chhabra,is facing a peculiar problem these days, courtesy of the website of the Municipal Corporation that is full of mistakes of all kinds. Chhabra’s phone number, apart from being listed with his name,is also listed as the number of Naresh Kumar, councillor of ward 18. This has resulted in the residents of ward 18 calling Chhabra for grievance redressal. Despite the issue repeatedly being taken up by the councillors, the IT wing of the MC seems to be in deep slumber with there being mistakes galore in the website.

Modi Effect

THE appointment of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the head of the committee that would lead BJP in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections led to celebrations in the Chandigarh unit of the party. Even before the announcement, senior BJP leaders from the city who are attending the party meeting in Goa had been circulating their pictures with Modi. The social media was flooded with such pictures with leaders showing off their “proximity” to the leader whose clout in the party is steadily growing.
