The rising anger over the onion shortage had singed not only the government but also mess contractors at the Panjab University hostel.

Onion shortage rocks campus too

The rising anger over the onion shortage had singed not only the government but also mess contractors at the Panjab University hostel. One of the residents of the boys’ hostel demanded onions in the salad with the “rajma chawal meal”,the mess refused, and a quarrel ensued. The resident later complained to the university authorities, backed by others. They accused contractors of not providing quality food despite a budget hike given by the authorities in November last year. University authorities announced they would roll back part of the hike and would provide subsidised meals.

Some cops do face action

On orders issued by senior UT police officials,a sub-inspector and a constable have been suspended. Their fault was that they had let the media speak to the guard outside a Tanishq jewellery showroom robbed last week. This comes at time when many have demanded action against top cops for failing to save five-year-old Khushrpeet Singh from the kidnappers who murdered him. One of those officers remains in his post and two have been transferred, but this has not satisfied protesters.

Grievances on air

Newly elected Mayor Ravinder Pal Singh Pali is using the radio for connecting with residents. Pali will now resolve their grievances on a weekly basis. Pali is heard throughout the day on the radio, asking residents to inform him of their problems so that solutions can be found.
