Cn & Heard

This is yet another example of the abysmal depths to which the Panjab University has fallen.

Swear on your kids!
This is yet another example of the abysmal depths to which the Panjab University has fallen. There is no dearth of pressing issues that need to be tackled, but the Syndicate meeting witnessed a disgraceful drama when Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti challenged one of the members to swear upon his children.

Sobti wanted him to ‘testify’ that he had not misused his authority, through means of a covert advertisement. The member returned the favour with equal gusto, asking the Vice-Chancellor to take an oath upon his kids and ‘testify’ that he did not manipulate things. People often deride the disgraceful behaviour of our politicians in Assemblies and the Parliament but our honourable teachers are hardly setting a correct example either.

An invitation for development
Hectic activity was witnessed in Sector 35 recently, prior to the visit of Municipal Commissioner Dr Roshan Sunkaria when a green belt was dedicated to senior citizens. Officials of all departments were busy through the day trying to ensure that the area looked its best. Just before the commissioner was to arrive at the venue,a non-functional streetlight was discovered and immediately replaced. Elated residents stated that they now had the key to get development works done in the area — a simple invitation to Dr Sunkaria.

Two years and still fighting
During his tenure as the Head of the Cardiology department at PGI,Dr Anil Grover loved taking on the authorities. When he eventually left PGI,he made his dissent known against one and all. Even the PGI director was subjected to his ire. These days,Dr Grover is involved in a duel of a different kind with PGI. His retirement dues have not been cleared and a plethora of letters by him have remained unanswered. Even a period of two years hasn’t eased the tension between the doctor and the institution.

Mind your language
A recent invitation sent by District Public Relations Officer (DPRO),Mohali, was an illustration of how not to write English language. The writing gave an impression that a new body by the name of Milkfed was being constituted to distribute bonuses. It read,“Milkfed is being organised bonus distribution function…” Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s name was mentioned as SPS Badal. Relations was spelt as ‘Ralations’. Punjabi may be the official language of the state government, but such woeful exhibition of a widely-used language is not acceptable.
