Acting on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) has issued a final public notice to all residents, institutions, shopkeepers, market associations and commercial establishments, warning them to remove all encroachments within three days. The notice, released on Friday, states that any structure or occupation on green belts, market areas, footpaths or government land must be cleared voluntarily, failing which “strict action will be taken without any further notice”.
Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh said this is the last warning being given to “every individual, shopkeeper, organisation and market association in the city”. “If any encroachment is found after three days, the joint team constituted under high court’s directions comprising officials from the MC, GMADA and the police, will reach the spot and take immediate action,” Singh added.
The Commissioner further clarified that any damage caused during the operation will be entirely the responsibility of the violator, and the full cost of the demolition will be recovered from them. The civic body has also made it clear that “no separate or additional notice will be issued to anyone”.
Following the announcement, panic has spread among those who have illegally occupied green belts, footpaths and public spaces. The corporation has also appealed to citizens to remove encroachments on their own and help keep the city clean, orderly and compliant with the law.
In a separate order, the MC Commissioner assigned duties to officials and directed that the drive will begin in Phases 4 and 5 on December 2.
Municipal Town Planner Rajneesh Wadhwa and two architects have been given joint charge of the operation. Officers from the civic body and the GMADA will also be present on the ground. One earth mover machine each will be provided by the MC and GMADA.
The Superintendent of the tehbazar department has been tasked with clearing encroachments in market areas. Notably, many showroom owners have created temporary and permanent structures behind their shops, which will also be targeted.
Officials said the action is being initiated on December 2 because a defamation case related to this matter is pending, and the high court has issued clear instructions to remove all illegal encroachments from the city without delay.
