Clashes occur at Evening Dept

Student parties at the evening studies department clashed on the University premises on Thursday. PUSU members alleged that some SOPU members came near the tents (pitched for campaigning) in cars,hit the car of a PUSU worker and sped away. After some time they returned and started abusing and hitting first year students sitting at the PUSU tent. “They came out of their cars and started hitting our supporters,” said Khushkaran Singh,PUSU supporter and student of UIET. He added that the SOPU supporters took away a phone and a gold chain of one of the PUSU members.

SOPU leaders said that these are gimmicks by PUSU and no SOPU members were involved in the fight. “All those present were outsiders and we know none of them”,said Jagatpal Brar,a SOPU member from the evening studies department. Police rounded up four youths from the spot,who were taken to the Sector 11 police station on grounds of preventive action. No FIR was registered against them. Security staff at the university said that no identity cards were found in their possession.

University Security Chief P K Dhawan,ordered all tents near Evening Studies to be pulled down. A police check-post was immediately made near the spot and all vehicles,especially with stickers of parties,were thoroughly checked.
