Temporary clerks protest at PU
Chandigarh: 183 temporary clerks who had lost their job after Panjab University (PU) appointed 307 permanent clerks,staged a protest on Thursday outside the Vice-Chancellors office. Their sole demand was for their jobs to be restored. Prof A K Bhandari,registrar PU,says,We have appointed permanent clerks so how can we take them back? The university has 730 sanctioned posts of clerks of which 625 posts were occupied by temporary clerks till recently.
Driver electrocuted to death in Ambala
Ambala: One person was killed in a road accident on Thursday. A container truck driver on his way to the factory to pick up goods was electrocuted when his vehicle touched a live wire in Mohra. The PP in-charge Gulzar said the driver was from Panipat and although he had been rushed to the civil hospital by the police,he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
5-yr-old boy tests positive for swine flu
Chandigarh: A five-year-old boy from Hallo Majra has tested positive for the H1N1 swine flu,taking the total number of cases to 35 in the city so far since September 2012. Officials of the UT health department said only one positive case of H1N1 has been reported from Chandigarh in the last 24 hours. The patient has been quarantined and is receiving treatment at PGI. Tamiflu preventive medicine has been administered to the parents and the family members of the patient.
State Bar Council elections this year
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday dismissed a petition which had raised apprehension that Bar Council elections may not be held on May 31 and June 1. A lawyer,appearing on behalf of the Bar Council today made it clear that the State Bar Council is determined to hold elections on the specified dates. The elections were slated to take place in December last year.
Schoolteachers purse snatched
Panchkula: Unidentified youths on motorcycles snatched the purse of a teacher of a private school in Sector 7 on Thursday afternoon. The bag contained Rs 500 and a mobile phone and it was snatched from her as she was returning home,following which she made a complaint at the Sector 5 police station. Police said the woman couldnt recall the number of the motorcycle the youth were riding and have begun investigating the matter.
Educating the youth on energy conservation
Chandigarh: Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) conducted a youth programme at Shivalik Public School,Sector 41. They educated the students on the importance of energy conservation in our daily lives. Students were shown an educational film and a power point presentation.
Whiz quizzing on science day
Panchkula: On the occasion of national science day,a science quiz was organized among class VII and VIII students at Blue Bird High school,Sector 16,Panchkula. The whole class was divided into four teams and during the eight grilling rounds of questions,one word answers,discoveries and scientific names were asked.
