A labourer,identified as Mohsin,was killed on Wednesday afternoon after coming under a train on the tracks near Ghaggar river.

16-yr-old labourer killed on rail tracks

CHANDIGARH: A labourer,identified as Mohsin,was killed on Wednesday afternoon after coming under a train on the tracks near Ghaggar river. Aged around 16 years,the deceased was resident of Vikasnagar. He was accompanied by four other people when he died around 3.30 pm on Wednesday afternoon.

The Government Railways Police is investigating the case,while the police has recorded the statements of eye witnesses. “We are anticipating that the deceased was pushed from behind onto the tracks. We are recording the statements of the eyewitnesses and his family members and will thereafter register a case,” said Station House Officer,GRP Chandigarh.

The body has been taken to General Hospital in Sector 6,Panchkula for post-mortem.

Self defence camp at Dev Samaj College ends

CHANDIGARH: The six-day long self defence camp organised in Dev Samaj College for Women in Sector 45 B concluded on Wednesday. Apart from the martial arts programme,students were also taught yoga to refresh their mind. Volunteers were taught self defence moves like slap,take down and knife grappling. Also,a Safety Riding Training was conducted with the help of Platinum Honda Sales,Industrial Area 1,Chandigarh. A female instructor provided practical training with the help of two wheeler simulators.

As part of the literacy programme of the college,children from Burail were also provided lessons,which winded up with distribution of pencils and copies to the students.

Lecture on ‘How to be happy’ at UBS

CHANDIGARH: A lecture on ‘How to be Happy in Life’ was organised by Chandigarh Management Association (CMA) at University Business School (UBS),Panjab University (PU),on Wednesday with over 60 CMA members present. The guest speaker on the occasion was Colonel Gursewak Singh,a city-based consultant on stress management and a specialist in marital counseling who has also authored many books on stress management. Speaking on the occasion,Colonel Singh explained the theory of the human mind,the role of the conscious and subconscious mind and how the power of the subconscious mind can help people achieve,health,happiness and success in life.

He explained the concept of human aura and effect of colours on the human body,besides talking about benefits of practicing cosmic meditation. A short cosmic meditation exercise was also conducted on the occasion.

Senior citizen hurt in chain-snatching attempt

CHANDIGARH: A senior citizen,who was returning from an evening walk with her husband on Tuesday,suffered bruises after two unidentified persons allegedly snatched her gold chain. According to the police,the victim Gayatri Prasad (60) was returning to her relatives’ house in Sector 7 after an evening walk when two unidentified persons riding on a motorcycle snatched her chain. As a result,Prasad fell on the road and suffered bruises on her arms.

A case for assault in attempt to commit theft of property and theft under sections 356 and 379 of the Indian Police Code has been registered in the Sector 5 police station.

Sixth case of vehicle theft at Sector 5

NDIGARH: The Panchkula Police has booked a case of theft under Section 379 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) after a resident of Sector 8 alleged his Mitsubushi Lancer,parked outside his house, was missing. This is the sixth case of vehicle theft that has been registered this month at the Sector 5 Police Station.

Colourful show ends annual day celebrations

Annual Day celebrations at The British School (TBS),Mohali,concluded on Wednesday with a colourful cultural evening at Tagore Theatre in Sector 18.

The cultural programme,choreographed by teacher Sameer Mahajan,witnessed the participation of as many as 500 students of the school.

The theme of the function was to emphasise the need to safeguard the flora,fauna and natural endowments. This was brought alive by a performance ‘God’s Creation’ by students. Displaying a dwindling number of butterflies,the presentation drove home the point of environmental preservation.

A play called ‘Little Mermaid’ was also staged by students that highlighted the importance of moral values.

Another much appreciated performance was a play ‘A Child’s Fantasy’,where the students showed a dream world of Fairy Land with a dash of different hues and colours.

The Guest of Honour on the occasion was Sudhir Mohan,Deputy General,Public Relations,Haryana Government.

On the occasion,Reena Sethi,Director,TBS,Mohali said,“The aim of education being imparted at the school is to give the students a modern outlook,while keeping them rooted to the rich traditions of Indian society. The annual day celebrations are a good mix of both modernity and tradition.”

As part of the celebrations,students were awarded for scholastic,co-scholastic and sports achievements through the year.

Contractor booked for negligence after labourer dies at construction site

Chandigarh: A labourer died on Tuesday evening after falling off a construction site of Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB) in Sector 63. The deceased was identified as Jagat Pal. Police have registered a case of negligence against the private contractor handling construction at the site.

Pal was working at CHB’s construction site of residential flats.

He was repairing a lift on the sixth floor of the site when it suddenly fell to the ground,taking him along. Pal (20) suffered multiple injuries and was taken to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER),where he declared brought dead.

A case of causing death due to negligence under Section 304-A of the IPC has been registered against the contractor,B L Mehta,at Sector 34 police station.

Pal hailed from Uttar Pradesh and was the sole bread-winner of the family,police said.

Youth held on charges of raping minor girl

The Chandigarh police,on Wednesday,arrested a 20-year-old youth for allegedly raping a 12-year- old girl at her paternal uncle’s residence. The accused,identified as Pawan,is a distant relative of the victim,according to police.

The victim is a resident of Bapu Dham Colony where she lives with her parents on the ground floor,while her parental uncle resides on the first floor of the same house.

On Wednesday afternoon,the victim had visited her parental uncle’s room. It was while the victim was alone that the accused,a frequent visitor,entered the room and allegedly raped her.

The girl then went back to her room on the ground floor and informed her mother about the incident. The victim’s parents then called the police,after which Pawan was arrested.

The girl was later taken to Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 16,where medical reports confirmed rape.

A case of rape under Section 377 of the IPC has been registered against the accused,who will be presented in a local court on Thursday.
