Man convicted of kidnapping minor

Panchkula: Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Sandhir on Tuesday convicted a man of kidnapping a minor. The court passed the order against Sonu alias Vicky for allegedly kidnapping a minor girl from Pinjore on July 4,2012. According to the prosecution case,the girl was kidnapped by the accused and later rescued by the Pinjore police from Ambala. Although the girl had reportedly said that she had married the boy,the marriage was not held valid,and a case of kidnapping was registered against Sonu. The quantum of punishment in the case will be pronounced on 26 April.

School organises parent-orientation programme

Chandigarh: St Anne’s Convent School,Sector 32,has taken an initiative to bridge a gap between parents and the school management. It has decided to enable parents to take a proactive role in their child’s education by organizing parents orientation programmes for Classes X to XII. Father Anil Sequeira presided over the programme.

National cultural seminar held at Panjab University

Chandigarh: While inaugurating a seminar Aurat ki Duniya aur Halli ki Nazme,Sameer Mathur,additional chief secretary with Haryana,stated that “halli panipati” is a symbol of intellectual inheritance of Haryana’s social reconstruction. He further stated that Halli made Urdu into a language of development and freedom. This national seminar was organised by the Department-cum-Centre for Women’s Studies and Development,Panjab University in collaboration with Urdu Academy,Haryana and Shuruat Samiti,Karnal.

City students win national abacus contest

Chandigarh: Tushaar Batheja and Jiya Batheja,students of St Kabir Public School,Sector 26,won the National Champion Trophy at 22nd National Abacus BrainoBrain Competition held at New Delhi on April 21. Tushaar,a student of Class VI,cleared seventh-level test in the category of 11-14 years and Jiya,a student of Class III cleared the first-level test in the category of 7-9 years by doing quick mental arithmetic sums. Over 4,500 students from different cities of India participated in the competition.

World Book Day celebrated at Hansraj school

Chandigarh: World Book Day was celebrated on Tuesday at Hansraj Public School to highlight the value and importance of books. The celebrations began with a really educative and inspiring talk by school principal Jaya Bhardwaj in a special assembly. She stressed upon the importance and urgent need of inculcating the habit of reading books right from childhood. Students were also taken to library and given the opportunity to browse through books.

Judges,public to participate in Earth Week Walk

Chandigarh: Underscoring the necessity of preserving valuable resources during Earth Week,judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court,lawyers,students and general public will participate in a Walkathon on Wednesday. The walkathon has been organized by JAI (Jurists and Associates International),Bar Association of Punjab and Haryana,New Public School,EFSO (Eco Friendly Sports Organization),DAV Schools of tricity. The march would be flagged off by Justice Jasbir Singh,Acting Chief Justice.

Panel submits report on snag in rail link

Chandigarh: A committee constituted to conduct an inquiry into the snag at the Chandigarh-Ludhiana rail link submitted its report to the Divisional Railway Manager,Ambala Division. The inquiry was ordered when a fault was detected,a day after the link was inaugurated,due to which the Chandigarh-Amritsar Superfast Express train was delayed by an hour. DRM P K Sanghi said he was yet to see the report.

BJP stages dharna against ‘misbehaviour’ of MC Secy

Ambala: Scores of BJP workers,led by Chaura Bazar Shopkeepers Association president Sat Pal Dall,staged a dharna in front of the Municipal Corporation’s office in Ambala Cantonment against the alleged misbehaviour meted out to the party workers by MC secretary Sanjay Kumar Yadav when they had met him in his office Monday. Dhall alleged the secretary didn’t respond to their demand for development works in the town. Instead,he made sarcastic remarks on their party’s MLA who was elected to the Vidhan Sabha. The secretary however denied the allegations,saying he knew of his duties and had listened to them calmly. He said he had not used unparliamentary language.

INLD protests against ill-treatment of farmers

Ambala: Irked over mismanagement in procurement of wheat in the grain markets of the district,INLD workers led by district president Balvinder Punia inspected the grain market of Ambala City and complained against the shortcomings found in the lifting of wheat brought by the farmers by the procurement agencies. They alleged that the farmers had to wait for long to sell their produce. They also alleged the payment of procured wheat was not made on time and the farmers were made to wait.
