The CBI has filed a chargesheet against four Punjab Police officers in a case of custodial death, the Punjab and Haryana High Court was told Thursday during the resumed hearing of a petition arising out of a suo motu cognizance taken by it.
Those chargesheeted are Sub-Inspector Gurmukh Singh,Assistant Sub-Inspector Ajit Singh and two constables Majit Singh and Gurjit Singh. Gurmukh Singh and Ajit Singh are already behind bars.
The case pertains to one Roor Singh of Nurpur Jattan village, who was arrested in connection with a fake currency case and had died in Kapurthala districts Dhilwan police station allegedly due to poisoning in September 2009.
Following the incident, the high court had ordered a CBI probe and given the agency three months to submit its report. In its orders, the bench had observed: Their stand of the arrest on September 5,2009,instead of September 4,2009,has been found to be false.
Their version of sudden fall in blood pressure and giving of injection and taking (the victim) to the hospital where oxygen was administered has been found to be false.
Though the incident occurred in 2009,it was only on the directions of Punjab and Haryana High Court in August 2010,that a case was registered against the four policemen after an inquiry by IGP (Crime) B K Uppal indicted them.
