Chandigarh police fails to recover dues of over Rs 14 crore: Report

Audit report also highlights negligence of police administration in spending money meant for welfare of the organisation

THE UT Police has failed to recover more than Rs 14 crore from different institutions for providing security and rendering other services. The pending dues are piling up every year and the police administration seems to have turned a blind eye.

According to an audit and inspection report, accessed by Chandigarh Newsline, the total pending dues amount to Rs 14.89 crore. It includes Rs 10.60 lakh from Haryana Cricket Association, Rs 4.66 crore from Kings XI Punjab and Rs 6.20 crore from banks for providing them security.

Sources told Chandigarh Newsline that the dues had been pending since 2007 and no serious effort was made by the police administration to recover this amount.

Apart from the outstanding dues, the report also highlighted the negligence of the police administration in spending the money meant for the welfare of the organisation. According to the report, the police administration suffered losses worth crores for making ‘irregular’ purchase of computers and hardware, wasteful expenditure on hiring vehicles and non-working of Reva cars.

The audit and inspection note of the previous year also pointed towards many irregularities on the part of the higher authorities in maintaining the infrastructure and spending ‘unjustified’ amount on different occasions.

The auditors found that the irregularities were made in non-recovery of towing charges, unjustified expenditure on farewell parties, irregularities in purchase of horses, irregular use of Gypsy for VIP escort, irregular use of cellular phones and irregular maintenance of log books.

UT Inspector General of Police R P Upadhyay did not respond to phone calls and messages.
