The Chandigarh police on Thursday added a dedicated bulletproof vehicle, christened Kavach Rakshak, to its fleet of Quick Reaction Team (QRT)s.
As per details, the new vehicle will carry commandos, who will be armed with sophisticated weapons, and will be on alert 24×7 to counter any terrorist activity in the city. On Thursday, UT Administrator, Banwarilal Purohit, dedicated the Kavach Rakshak vehicle to Chandigarh Police, in the presence of Chandigarh DGP Praveer Ranjan and other senior police officers.
Ranjan later said that the new vehicle, in addition to strengthening the capabilities of the Chandigarh Police, will also help the force respond to any untoward situation. The primary aim of deploying this vehicle, he added, was to promptly respond to any terror attack in real life and to instill a feeling of security and safety among citizens by their visibility and deterrence.
A police officer said, “The policemen, who were given commando training, are part of the elite strike force of the city police. The men in the QRT Kavach Rakshak vehicle will be equipped with AK-47 rifles, MP5 machine guns, Glock pistols and light machine guns.”
