CCA storekeeper caught with stolen heritage chairs

The Chandigarh Police today arrested the storekeeper of Chandigarh College of Architecture,Sector 12,while he was trying to transport seven heritage chairs he had allegedly stolen from the college on Monday.

The Chandigarh Police today arrested the storekeeper of Chandigarh College of Architecture (CCA),Sector 12,while he was trying to transport seven heritage chairs he had allegedly stolen from the college on Monday. The cost of the heritage furniture is expected to be in crores in the international market. The accused has been identified as Daddu Majra resident Ramesh (45). Each chair fetches close to Rs 20-25 lakh in international auctions.

The incident comes close on the heels of similar furniture being sold at hefty prices by international auction houses. The Chandigarh Administration had been facing flak for the past couple of years for its failure to preserve heritage items.

According to police,the accused was nabbed after they got a tip off. Ramesh was caught at a police naka near gate number 1 of Panjab University on Tuesday afternoon. The accused was nabbed while he was taking the broken chairs away.

Ramesh was reportedly taking the chairs to his residence in Dadumajra. During police questioning,he revealed that he had stolen the chairs from the storeroom and hidden it in college premises.

On Monday,CCA principal Pardeep Bhagat had lodged a complaint with the police regarding the missing chairs. A case in this regard has been registered in Sector 11 police station. The police had initially questioned the staff and had even carried out checks at various places in the college.

PGI police post in-charge Eram Rizwi confirmed the arrest. The accused will be presented in a local court on Wednesday.
