CHIP,chap, crack, cut, burn, bruise – face it,the summer heat is a killer. And parked outside, your cars the first casualty of the insufferable heat wave. Unless you ready it for the summer onslaught, points out Bhalinder Sangha of Sangha Motorcraft. So,if youre one of those who drive without asking for directions, then stop, and read the signs carefully.
REV UP: Engine oil, especially for people who do not drive much so the mileage does not have an effect,as is the case in Chandigarh. Therefore,a seasonal change is essential. People also need to see which grade they should take,as certain grades are better for higher temperatures, says Pritpal Matharu of EssPee Industries.
COOL CONTENT – Coolant is something which most people top with water, which reduces the percentage of coolant in the system after a certain time. Not very good, especially where temperatures are high. The boiling temperature of water is 100 degrees while coolant is higher. So,a 70 per cent water and 30 per cent coolant mix (recommended) can increase the capacity of the radiator to absorb and dissipate heat, educates service manager Dinesh Chawla of Tata Motors.
TYRE TALK – While it may be a good idea to over inflate tyres by around 10 per cent of recommended pressure, the mantra of checking tire pressure when the tyres are cold needs to be better respected in summer because expansion will be higher, thus the effect on the tyre of over inflation will be more, leading to a bumpy ride and also a problem in braking as well as lower the life of shock absorbers, Bhalinder advises once a week. As for the spare tyre – how many people check it,more so with tubeless tyres around? Higher temperatures make tyres run softer, thereby increasing the chances of a puncture. Be prepared for chances of a blow out of a worn out tyre also go up in summers. And replace bald tyres.
SWITCH ON – Its hot,and air-conditioning is a must. Most people do not switch on the A/C for months – this can change the level of gas in the system. Also, the condenser unit may be clogged with leaves and other stuff during the winter – a check and clean is must, recommends Bhalinder. Avoid running the blower without the AC for it attracts a lot of dust and foreign material, chips in Dinesh.
COVER UP – Cover the steering wheel and dashboards against direct sun else it will crack. Cars these days have expensive upholstery, especially, leather which can crack or get brittle in the sunlight. Get the leather conditioned at least twice in summers to make it soft. Its the same for dashboard, says Bhalinder.
SCREEN SPACE – Ever wondered how you leave a perfectly good windscreen and come back to a cracked one? Blame it on the heat and the warm air pressure rolled up windows cause. So,whenever you park your car, roll down your window by a centimeter,it will keep the car clear of any warm air pressure, advises Dinesh. Also,go in for certified 70 per cent visibility car films and windshield shade, these really help, adds Bhalinder. You can also go in for screens that are sold on the traffic lights, but dont forget to bargain!
WARNING – A good waxing helps protect the car paint. Get your car serviced before summers. Get it car cleaned and washed once a week, Pritpal tips about brake and clutch fluids, battery electrolyte levels and vaseline or grease to prevent corrosion. Never leave children, pets, sports equipment,make-up or electronics in a parked car in the summer heat.
