As per the instructions of the Election Commission of India, public meetings of more than five people are restricted for a period of 48 hours from 6 pm on May 8 till conclusion of voting on May 10. Deputy Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer Jaspreet Singh clarified that no political party would campaign within a radius of 100 metre of the polling station on May 10.
He pointed out that detailed instructions had also been issued regarding dry days for a period of 48 hours from the evening of May 8 till the completion of voting besides on the day of counting, i.e. May 13.
There are 16,22,800 electors in the Jalandhar Lok Sabha constituency, of whom 38,313 are above the age of 80 years while 10,526 are PWD (persons with disabilities) voters. The Phillaur Assembly segment has a maximum number of voters, i.e. 1,99,776. As many as 1,972 polling stations are in the Lok Sabha constituency, said the DC, adding that all requisite arrangements were being put in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful election.
The DC said that there would be a dedicated ‘women-only polling station’, which is to be managed by the women, in each of the nine Assembly constituencies. One polling station would be set up in the local Pingalwara Ghar, which is also to be managed by the Divyang persons (persons with disabilities), he added.
