Nothing professional about it

One of the professional departments of Panjab University, the Law Department,is dealing with ‘not so professional’ problems these days. The department office in addition to the head of department seems to be busy dealing with and getting to an ‘amicable’ solution to the complaints that are pouring in from all quarters,be it students or teachers. While, the students land at the office with complaints relating to ‘weird’ rules imposed by the teachers from wearing a tie over salwar kameez during class presentations to submitting the assignments in a plastic file cover only which is otherwise banned by the department. On the other hand, the teachers fumingly complain about students making sounds of a cat or a hen while they are delivering their lectures.

Unmasked

‘Show us his real face’,was a remark made by a division bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Raising eyebrows on the antecedents of a petitioner who had filed a public interest litigation. Confused over the remark,a budding lawyer immediately turned around in search of the petitioner who was sitting behind him. The petitioner was made to stand asking him to show his ‘real’ face. The Division Bench and those sitting in the court could not control their laughter.

Bitter surprise

The officials at the State Institute of Education left no stones unturned for winning the UT Education Secretary’s appreciation during the closing ceremony of State Science Exhibition on Saturday. However, the end minute announcement of the changes in the schedule of prize distribution ceremony left everyone embarrassed. While the team had kept their subordinates as well as the student participants on their toes for making best arrangements for the ceremony, the Education Secretary V K Singh sent a message at the eleventh hour that he will not be able to attend the function. Disappointed, the students were handed over their prizes by the officials.

Dummy candidates

The leaders of political parties who were eyeing certain wards in the city were a disappointed lot after these were reserved for women candidates. However, not willing to give up their stake in the ward they are planning to field their wives. Some of them can be seen campaigning with their better halves making them familiar with the territory. With the benefit of hindsight they might as well have been ‘grooming’ their spouses when the going was good. But it is also a lesson for others who might ‘lose’ their wards to reservation next time.

Facebook woes

Strange are the experiments of Chandigarh Traffic Police of harassing the commuters, rather stranger are the ways to take feedback. DSP Traffic,Vijay Kumar had to field a volley of phone calls by angry commuters after an experiment with automatic traffic control at peak office hours led to traffic jams. He insisted that the grievances be put on Facebook. Reason: the traffic police had received complaints on Facebook that the manual system of controlling traffic is not working well. Evidently the DSP was not aware that the system for manual traffic control at certain points and at certain times was introduced precisely because the automated system was not found successful.
