DSP awarded three RI for graft
Hoshiarpur: A Hoshiarpur court on Monday ordered three year imprisonment for Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Parminder Singh who was booked for taking Rs 1.5 lakh in bribe from one Jasminder Singh promising to get him a job in the Municipal Corporation,Jalandhar. Resham Kaur,mother of Jaswinder,in a written statement to the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) Commandant,Jalandhar,had alleged that the DSP neither provided the job nor did he return the money. Justice A K Singla pronounced two sentences – three year jail and a fine of Rs 5,000 and one year jail and Rs 2,500 fine. Both punishments will run together.
Marriage hall owners reminded of norms
Ludhiana: Deputy Commissioner of Moga,Ashok Singla has asked owners of all the marriage palaces to ensure that the conditions laid down by the state government are fulfilled before they rent out their premises. Singla,who met marriage palace owners on Monday,said that they need to ensure that there is ample parking place for the guests,a water treatment plant is installed within the premises,electricity fittings should have an approval from the power board,fire equipment installed within the premises should not be outdated and the halls should be sound proof. Meanwhile the owners said that they were facing problem in procuring liquor licenses. The DC assured to take up the issue of with the excise officials.
Sheikh Baba Farid heritage festival begins
Ludhiana: To mark the birth anniversary of 12th century Sufi Saint Sheikh Baba Fard,a colourful heritage walk and mela was kicked off at Faridkot on Monday. The day began with people from nearby areas paying obeisance at the Gurdwara Tilla Baba Farid. Deputy Commissioner Ravi Bhagat along with his wife Tarundeep Kaur,ADC Mohan Lal and other officials were also present on the occasion.
Capt busy,Saini Sammelan postponed
Chandigarh: The Saini Sammelan scheduled to be held at Ropar on September 25 has now been postponed indefinitely. The programme has been postponed due to some pressing engagements of the Punjab Congress Committee president Capt Amarinder Singh that day and a new date will be announced later,PCC vice-president Laal Singh said on Monday.

JALANDHAR: Professor Samir Kumar Das,head of mining engineering department at IIT-Kharagpur would be joining as the director of Dr B R Ambedkar National Institute of Technology,Jalandhar on or before September 30,registrar AL Sangal said on Monday.
Youth held for killing brother
NAWANSHAHR: Police officials on Monday arrested a youth,Vijay Kumar (23) on charges of killing his elder brother Rakesh Kumar (25) early in the morning. SHO Nawanshahr city police station KD Sharma said that as per the preliminary investigation the brothers had a fight over the ownership of their house. The SHO said that the deceased was working as a clerk with a local lawyer and had reportedly borrowed money from his employer for the construction of the house. There are three brothers and they were in a dispute as the victim wanted to get the house registered in his name, the SHO said.
Dal Khalsa takes a swipe at Modi fast
JALANDHAR: Reacting to the three-day fast of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi,Dal Khalsa on Monday warned the people against trusting him. President of the Dal Khalsa,Harcharanjit Singh Dhami,said the Sadbhavana (goodwill) mission launched by Modi was just a cloak to hoodwink the electorate at large. Dal Khalsa secretary Kanwar Pal Singh meanwhile said that being a Sikh,Punjab chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal should have desisted from aligning with a person who is considered to be an enemy of the Muslim world.
Rice mill owners seek more time
Chandigarh: Demanding an extension to rice milling period,the cut-off was Septmber 15,the rice mill owners in Punjab said 25 per cent of paddy was still lying unmilled. If date is extended till October 30 without any riders,90 per cent of milling can be completed. It is both in national and traders interest, Bal Krishna Singla,president emeritus,Punjab Arhtiya Association and senior vice-president of the All India Foodgrain Dealers Association said in a press statement on Monday.
