Faridkot: In a case of honour killing,an engineering student,who was missing since last month,was allegedly killed by the mother of a girl with whom he had an affair,police said on Tuesday. Amandeep Kaur,who was arrested on Monday,during interrogation confessed to pushing Gurtej Singh into a canal as she was against her daughter’s relationship with the youth,they said. Gurtej,a student of Adesh Engineering College,had gone missing from his house on the night of August 26. His family had received ransom calls demanding Rs one crore. The victim’s father Sherjhang Singh had filed a police complaint against the girl’s family,alleging that he was abducted by them as they were against the affair.

Judicial service exam postponed

Chandigarh: Haryana and Punjab Superior Judicial Service main written examinations,scheduled to be held from September 16 to 18 September,and September 23 to 25 respectively,have been postponed. The Registrar,Recruitment,said: “Now,the Haryana and Punjab Superior Judicial Service main written examination will be held from October 21 to 23 and November 4 to 6 respectively.”

Freedom fighter Sharma passes away

Ludhiana: Freedom fighter Ram Parkash Sharma (98) passed away at his Ferozepur cantonment residence late on Tuesday night. He was cremated with state honours on Tuesday. Additional deputy commissioner of Ferozepur,APS Kharbanda said: “Late Sharma was part of Subash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind force and he served six years in jail in Singapore.” Political leaders,government officers and people from all walks of life attended his cremation.

Punjab IAS officers are poll observers

Chandigarh: For the elections of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee scheduled to be held on September 18,two IAS officers of Punjab cadre,Jagpal Singh and SK Sandhu,have been appointed as election observers who will ensure that campaigning in state is conducted in accordance with the Model Code of Conduct. Jagpal Singh would be the election observer for districts of Kurukshetra,Yamunangar and Karnal while Sandhu will be the observer for Kaithal,Sonepat and Panipat. Voting would be conducted without any break at 75 polling centres from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 18. The camps to be set up by the candidates outside polling centres should be out of a radius of 200 meters. He said that the candidates could appoint Polling Agents too who would be allowed inside the polling centre only after signing the requisite declaration forms.
