Patiala: Sikh scholar Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha was paid rich tributes at a seminar organised by the Punjabi University to mark his 150th birth anniversary at the Senate Hall here on Tuesday. While describing his “Sikh Mahan Kosh”

(Encyclopaedia of Sikhism) as ‘the greatest primary source material for any type of Sikh studies,Vice-Chancellor,Dr Jaspal Singh,said that the Punjabi University was publishing the English and Hindi translations,besides reprinting the Punjabi version of the monumental work,using latest technologies. While three of the four volumes in English and Punjabi have already been published,the remaining work on these will be completed soon,he said.

GADVASU regional centre in Tarn Taran

AMRITSAR: Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU) Vice-Chancellor Dr VK Taneja said that they will be setting up a regional centre of the varsity at the Booh village in Tarn Taran to cater to the border areas. He was speaking at the animal welfare camp at Booh to treat the animals and also to guide the livestock farmers regarding scientific rearing of animals. He said the centre will also work to improve health as well as nutritional status of the livestock.

Pollution board shuts 9 electroplating units

JALANDHAR: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) on Tuesday closed nine electroplating units which were reluctant to join the common Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) located at Ludhiana. PPCB took decision after conducting hearing of 27 industries under section 33-A of Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act,1974. The rest 16 units have joined CETP at Ludhiana. One industry has installed the system to achieve zero liquid discharge. While one more industry has dismantled its electroplating plant.

Police seize poppy husk worth Rs 44 lakh

Patiala: The Patiala police claim to have seized 44 quintals of poppy husk,worth Rs 44 lakh. Patiala Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Gill said the poppy husk was seized from a truck during checking near Rohar Jagir village on Patiala-Pehowa road on Sunday. Police said the accused fled leaving the truck after the police party asked them to stop the truck. A case under NDPS act has been registered against the accused.

Sidhu appointed dean of Canada institute

Patiala: Thapar University alumnus Dr Tarlochan Singh Sidhu has been appointed Dean of the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT),Canada. Sidhu will head the faculty of engineering and applied science at UOIT. Sidhu was professor and chair of the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Western Ontario in London,Ontario.

NAWANSHAHR: The Congress has swept the election to the Board of Directors of the Primary Agriculture Development Bank ( PADB) here. Out of 6 zones,the Congress won election in 5 Zones while the ruling SAD (B) could win only in one zone. The Congress candidates – Sohan Lal (Majhoor zone),Karnail Singh Attari (Langroya Zone),Tara Singh Jabbowal (Nawanshahr Zone),Kuldip Singh Khaddar (Rahon zone) and Bachan Singh (Bharta Kalan Zone) and SAD (B) candidate Manjinder Kang (Aur Zone) were declared elected to the Board of Directors,PADB,Nawanshahr.

Two get life term for murder

Faridkot: A local court has sentenced a woman,her paramour and four others to life imprisonment for murdering her husband. The court held Narinder Kuar,her paramour Devinder Singh and their four associates guilty of murdering 30-year-old Kuldeep Singh in June,2010 and sentenced them to life imprisonment. Narinder was married to Kuldeep about four years ago and they were staying at a rented house here. On June 14 last year,Kuldeep’s father Pal Singh lodged a police complaint stating that his son was missing. Kuldeep’s decomposed body was later recovered from a canal near Muktsar.

‘Begowal land case just tip of the iceberg’

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh on Tuesday welcomed the ordering of Lokpal inquiry into alleged “illegal occupation” of prime government land in Kapurthala district by former SGPC chief Jagir Kaur at the alleged behest of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Accusing the Chief Minister of patronising Jagir Kaur and supporting her in the illegal occupation of the Begowal Nagar Panchayat land worth crores of rupees,he said,”It is matter of time only when the ruling party will be exposed.” The PCC president also ridiculed the statement of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal that the case was a political gimmick. “By saying so does Sukhbir question the credentials of the Lokpal?” he asked. The former Chief Minister also referred to the recent protests by the Akalis and the hue and cry raised by Badal and Sukhbir during Anna Hazare’s agitation. “We had said that Anna would be ashamed of their support and now our stand has is being vindicated,” he said,claiming the case is just “the tip of the iceberg”.
