Ludhiana: Protesting over the ownership of more than 1,300 acres of land across the fence near Dona Talumel chowki of Border Security Force in Ferozepur,a large number of farmers were caned by the police on Wednesday. A few farmers sustained injuries in the incident. According to information,the protesters claimed that the land across the fence was in their name but the revenue department transferred it to landlords over the years. Kikar Singh,one of the farmers,said: “Farming is being done by big landlords now and many of us don’t even get two square meals. Our struggle will continue,but the administration is not supporting us at all.” The farmers have been protesting against this issue,under the banner of Zamin Bachao Sangrash Committee,for the last one year.

Teachers’ union members climb tank

BATHINDA: As many as six members of Alternative and Innovative Education (AIE) teachers union,including three women,climbed atop a water tank in Jai Singh Wala village on the Bathinda-Badal road on Wednesday,while registering their demands,which included admission to elementary teachers training (ETT) course for eligible members. The protesters,who carried petrol in bottles,came down after over five hours following an assurance by Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan. He asked the union members to meet him on May 24 in Chandigarh and submit their demands in writing.

‘Whole Cabinet must reply to graft charges’

AMRITSAR: People’s Party of Punjab (PPP) chief Manpreet Singh Badal on Wednesday took a dig at the SAD-BJP government over the recent corruption charges levelled against it,saying why just ministers,whole Cabinet must reply to the graft charges. He said this while addressing a public rally in Amritsar. Claiming that the CBI’s case was a mere tip of the iceberg,he added that the Cabinet,due to the principal of “collective responsibility” must come forward to clear their stand. Corruption will be PPP’s main agenda in the next Assembly elections,he said.

Bittu ill,under observation

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Youth Congress president and Sri Anandpur Saahib MP Ravnit Bittu is severely ill,according to a press release issued by his office on Wednesday. “Due to his recent hungerstrike of seven days in Ludhiana for the formation of a drug prevention board in Punjab,Bittu’s body is not accepting regular food and he has been vomiting. He is under observation and has been advised complete bed rest by the doctors. At present,he is recovering at his official residence in Delhi but if there is no sign of improvement in the coming days,he may have to be admitted to a hospital,” it stated. Bittu has cancelled his engagements for the coming seven days.

Delegation asks traders to invest in Sharjah

JALANDHAR: A delegation of Sharjah government,during their visit to Jalandhar on Wednesday,invited local entrepreneurs to set up their businesses in Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF-Zone). Humaid Abdullah Al-Khatri,Deputy Commercial Director of Sharjah government told mediapersons that 4,700 companies have already set up their businesses in SAIF Zone,out of which 40 per cent companies are from India. By taking this opportunity,the entrepreneurs can enjoy incentives including 100 per cent exemption from income and corporate taxes.

Woman,‘paramour’ held for murder

BATHINDA: The police on Wednesday claimed to solve a murder case with the arrest of a widow,Simarjit Kaur,and her “paramour” Rajinder Singh. According to the police,Jagraj Singh — a resident of Chak Heera Singh Wala — wished to have a relationship with Simarjit,who was allegedly involved with one Rajinder Singh. Rajinder nursed a grudge against Jagraj for his advances towards Simarjit. Simarjit invited Jagraj to her house on May 16,where he was allegedly strangled to death. The duo dumped Jagraj’s body in the fields. A friend of Jagraj,to whom the deceased had confided that he was going to Simarjit’s house,played a key role in cracking the case,said police.

US for partnership in solar power projects

AMRITSAR: A high-level delegation from the US Embassy in India,which visited Amritsar on Wednesday to interact with the local businessmen,stated that the US was eager for a partnership with India,especially Punjab,for generation of solar power. Greg O Connor of the commerce department of the American Consulate General in Delhi said there were around 40 US companies in India that have the technical knowhow to develop solar energy and want Punjab to adopt solar power generation projects.

64MW of power from AP from 2014

CHANDIGARH: Punjab will get 64MW of power from a hydroelectric power plant in Arunachal Pradesh from 2014. K D Chaudhri,Chairman and Managing Director of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL),informed that they had signed a Power Purchase Agreement with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) on Wednesday. He said that the NHPC is developing a 2000MW hydroelectric power plant in Arunachal Pradesh. Initially the agreement has been signed for five years which will be renewable automatically every five years until a new Power Purchase Agreement is signed by PSPCL and NHPC.

27 DSPs promoted

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Government issued orders,on Wednesday,promoting 27 Deputy Superintendent of Police to Superintendent of Police,checking a long standing stagnation in the cadre. According to an official spokesman those who have been promoted as Superintendent of Police included: Sukhdev Singh,Daljit Singh,Bahadur Singh,Manohar Lal,Narinder Kumar,Jatinder Singh,Ranbir Singh,Jasdeep Singh,Navjot Singh,Manjit Singh Gurmit Singh,Swarndeep Singh Balbir Singh,Gautam Singal,Lakhbir Singh,Arun Saini,Barjinder Singh,Ashish Kapoor,Jaspal Singh,Manjinder Singh,Bhupinder Singh,Raminder Singh,Simratpal Singh,Rajeshwar Singh,Parampal Singh,Mohan Lal and Manmohan Kumar.
