Obama must not skip Golden Temple: Harsimrat

Chandigarh: Member of Parliament from Bathinda Harsimrat Kaur Badal has urged the US government not to abort the proposed visit of President Barack Obama to the Golden Temple in Amritsar as sudden cancellation of his visit would send a wrong message to the Sikh community living all over the world. The US Embassy had invited a group of MPs recently to have an interaction to finalise the itinerary of Obama’s India trip. Harsimrat was one of them. The Akali Dal MP impressed upon US Assistant Secretary of State (South Asia) Robert Blake that several international dignitaries had paid obeisance at the Golden Temple without any security hassles and issues like observance of Sikh Maryada could be mutually sorted out at diplomatic level. She also impressed upon Blake that the US First Lady Michelle Obama should consider visiting the countryside in Bathinda district to see the level of women’s empowerment achieved through the Nanhi Chhaan programme.
