Teen held for school boys murder
JALANDHAR: Two weeks after an eight year old boy was killed on PAP campus,Police on Friday arrested a 17-year-old boy in connection with the case. The accused revealed that he wanted to kidnap the child to demand ransom as he wanted to buy branded clothes and mobile phones. The accused,a Plus two student of Police DAV Public School,had killed the Aman (8) on July 5 when the latter was alone at home. Both the accused and victim are the sons of policemen.
Head-on train collision averted
KAPURTHALA: The drivers of two trains managed to avert a head-on collision by applying the brakes when they found that the trains were moving towards each other on the same track at Hussainpur Railway Station. While one of the DEMUs was going to Ferozepur another was on way from the the same station to Jalandhar on the single track Jalandhar-Ferozepur section. Ferozepur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Vishvesh Chaubey said that an enquiry had been marked into the incident
Khaira wants Duronto halt at Jalandhar
CHANDIGARH: Congress MLA from Bholath,Sukhpal Khaira,has written to the railways ministry to arrange a halt of the Amritsar-Chandigarh Duronto Express at Jalandhar too. The service is likely to begin in a month. A brief halt of the proposed train at Jalandhar will help its citizens to travel to the capital city of Chandigarh and return the same evening. Residents of three districts of Doaba Jalandhar,Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala can avail of this facility, Khaira said. Khaira has also requested that the services of the proposed second Shatabadi train Delhi Ludhiana Delhi should also be extended to Jalandhar.
Open a window to receive applications
CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Secretary,Urvashi Gulati has directed all the administrative secretaries and head of departments to open a separate window in all offices to receive applications under the scheme to deliver 15 identified services to the people in a time bound manner. She also directed the officers not to ask the applicants to file affidavits for delivery of services
61 girls donate blood at RKMV
SHIMLA: Sixty-one girls and half a dozen members of the staff donated blood at voluntary blood donation camp today organised by Youth Red Cross at Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyala (RKMV) in collaboration with the Rotary Club,Shimla. Principal Naresh Mahajan was the chief guest at the function. Earlier,more than 200 students participated in an awareness camp on the blood donation drive. This was the second time when RKMV has organised the blood donation camp.
Notice to author for degrading judiciary
CHANDIGARH: Holding that prima facie charge of contempt is made out against him for degrading the judiciary at various levels,the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday directed Basant Dass,a resident of Rohtak,Haryana,to remain present in the Court on each and every date of hearing. Also,Justice Permod Kohli directed Dass to furnish a bail bond of Rs 50,000 along with a surety of a similar amount to the Registrar of the High Court within one week. Dass filed a reply in response to a show cause contempt notice issued by the High Court. The notices were issued after a petition sought contempt proceedings against Dass who had allegedly written a book degrading the judiciary.
Install speed governors in heavy vehicles: HC,/b>
CHANDIGARH: Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday directed the Haryana government to install speed governors in all heavy transport vehicles by September this year or else face music. A division bench headed by Justice Surya Kant directed the state to comply with the directions of the court issued in May this year failing which the secretary,transport,Haryana will have to remain present in the court. Meanwhile,the Punjab government today submitted that speed governors have been installed in a total of 334 heavy transport vehicles and the remaining process will be completed in a short while.
Bar council wants exam scrapped
CHANDIGARH: Terming it as double jeopardy for law students,the chairman of the Bar Council of Punjab and Haryana,Lekh Raj Sharma shot off a letter to the Bar Council of India seeking withdrawal of the All India Bar Examination Rules-2010. The rules were framed by the Bar Council of India last year wherein a law graduate,after completing his law degree,has to take a test if he intends to join the legal profession.
Denial of info: PCCF summoned
CHANDIGARH: The Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) of Punjab,RI Singh on Friday asked the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) to appear in person for the next hearing on a RTI application. The summons came after the PCCFs public information officer (PIO) failed to appear in the court and avoided the summons. The direction was issued in a case filed by Teja Singh of Dhuri in Sangrur,who had filed an RTI application in the office of the PCCF.
