BATHINDA: The venue of Bhog ceremony of Surinder Kaur Badal has been shifted from Badal village to Malout town due to inclement weather in the region in the last couple of days. The ceremony was scheduled on Thursday and elaborate arrangement had been made at Badal village. A number of distinguished personalities and senior politicians are expected to attend the ceremony. The ceremony will now be held at New Grain Market in Malout,which has permanent sheds to provide shelter in case it rains.

‘Say no to municipal amendment law’

SHIMLA: Opposing the imposition of taxes on residential houses and other buildings in Shimla’s merged areas — Shimla Citizens Forum — a voluntary body has asked Governor Urmila Singh to withhold her consent to the law. The taxes are being made possible by enacting a new Legislation HP Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill,2011. Forum’s convener Kuldeep Tanwar said a memorandum was submitted to the Governor on Tuesday seeking her intervention to reject the bill for reconsideration by the state assembly in view of growing opposition by the citizens. He threatened that the people would go on a mass demonstration if the decision was not reversed.

Peacock breeding programme kicks off

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government has initiated a peacock breeding project in Malwa,to check the depleting population of peacocks in the state. Forest and Wild Life Minister,Arunesh Shakir said that Chief MInister Parkash Singh Badal was quite concerned about the ill effects of insecticides and pesticides on the national bird and was taking a keen interest in the matter and will soon inaugurate the project in Bathinda. He said that in this centrally sponsored project,eggs of peacocks collected from Chatbir zoo and Tiger Safari,Ludhiana,would be bred under scientific supervision at “Beehar Pond” Bathinda. He said that after successful completion of this breeding programme,peacocks would be released in the Malwa Belt.

20 injured after bus accident

HOSHIARPUR: Around 20 passengers were injured,some seriously,when a Punjab roadways bus fell into a ditch near Nangal Pahari on Nangal Garhshankar road,on Wednesday evening around 5.40 pm. The Nangal depot bus was coming to Garhshankar when it went out of control near Nangal Pahari and fell into a ditch. No casualty was reported.

Bottles with drain water force change

JALANDHAR: Jalandhar Division Commissioner,S R Ladhar,has started carrying blackened water bottles,filled from Kala Sanghia drain,to create a visual impact in the meetings he is holding on the issue of polluted water in the drain. In the meeting of District Bar Association on Wednesday he presented the bottles of water filled from from Kala Sanghia drain,Chittti Bein and Budha Nullah and compared then with the water taken from river Beas and Kali Bein. After being shown this evidence,the DBA advocates announced to extend complete legal support to the victims of the pollution.

Engineering colleges surrender seats

JALANDHAR: Eight engineering colleges have surrendered their seats to Punjab Technical University (PTU),to allow them to be filled by general counselling. PTU also made a ranking of its 46 colleges. The ranking was made on the basis of academic performance and infrastructure etc. PTU also released a list of Top 20 colleges on the basis of academic performance and Top 10 Colleges on the basis of overall performance. PTU V-C Dr Rajnish Arora said that last year around 80 per cent of the seats were filled.

Training programme for jobless minorities

CHANDIGARH: The Union Ministry of Labour and Employment will start two free employment-oriented training programmes for the unemployed persons of SCs and STs registered in the employment exchanges. A spokesman of Employment Department (Haryana) said that during the programme,the candidates would be provided scholarships besides books,free of cost. The training programmes will commence from July 2011. A special coaching scheme for unemployed youth (SC and ST) who have passed Class-XII has been introduced will last for a period of 11 months.

Allowances for high-tension industries

CHANDIGARH: In compliance with the orders of the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission,the Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) has decided to allow eligible high-tension industries to use power up to 20 per cent of the sanctioned contract demand during peak load hours at a rate of Rs 2 per unit over and above normal tariff. A special dispensation beyond 20 per cent of contract demand would also be allowed to the industries on independent feeders working in three shifts on continuous operation basis.
