Within 24 hours of Himachal Pradesh University non-teaching staffs meeting Governor Urmila Singh,the university’s teachers association also knocked the Raj Bhawan’s doors on Friday seeking immediate intervention to stop interviews for the post of Controller of Examinations,slated for February 26. However,till late evening,there was no communication from the Governor. The university is going ahead with interviews for which 20 applicants have been called,after screening of all applications,to appear before the panel.If anyone has a grievance,he or she is free to approach the High Court,said Vice-Chancellor SK Gupta,currently in the eye of a storm as his term ends in April.

Mankotia defers his ‘fast unto death’

Former Congress Minister Major (Rtd) Vijai Singh Mankotia on Friday announced dropping of his plan to go on an ‘indefinite fast’ ,pinning his hopes on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh to drop Union Minister Virbhadra Singh,who is facing a trial on corruption charges in a Shimla court. Mankotia had two months ago written a letter to the PM levelling serious charges of corruption and misuse of power against Virbhadra Singh,a five-time Himachal CM.

Eleven injured in accident

Eleven teachers of Senior Secondary School Shakrah,near Ghanhatti of Shimla district,about 15 km from here,were injured when the vehicle in which they were travelling fell into a gorge on Friday evening. All of them were returning to Shimla after the school session for the day was over. Police said that the reason for accident of the Tempo-Trax number HP-02-3045,in which all were travelling is not known. All the injured,including school principal Yog Raj and six female teachers,were shifted to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital,Shimla.
