Shimla: Nearly 1,500 families of personnel from the first Gorkha Rifles from India and Nepal on Saturday assembled at Subathu for Reunion 2011- a unique five-day event which has the participation of retired and serving officers including Generals. Addressing jawans and officers Major General P S Ravindranath called the event a rare get-together for reviving old ties and sharing experiences of the veterans. Major General (Rtd) M L Rawat while sharing his experiences said calmness in crisis was the mantra for good officers.

Punjab gives Rs 92 cr for focal points

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab government on Sunday sanctioned Rs 92 crore to provide all necessary facilities to industrial units established in the focal points and Industrial estates. Industries Minister Tikshan Sud on Sunday said instructions have been issued to carry out work in all the focal points and industrial estates to change the face of the focal points across the state. He added that the step was being taken to attract more industrial investment.

Set up institutions in remote areas: Badal

CHANDIGARH: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday called upon educational institutions and educationists to set up branches in far flung rural areas like Kandi and other border areas in the state to impart quality and purposeful education to the ‘deprived’ youth of the concerned regions.Badal was addressing the gathering at the ‘Panth Rattan Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra Memorial Gurmat Awards function’ organised by Sikh Educational Society at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College.

Holiday in Ratia,Adampur on Nov 30

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana labour department has notified that November 30 will be a closed day(holiday) for shops and commercial establishments falling under the jurisdictions of Ratia and Adampur assembly constituencies to enable people working in these establishments to exercise their franchise in the bypolls scheduled on the same day.

Seminar against caste in Shimla

SHIMLA: More than 25 experts ,sociologists and social activists will participate in three day long seminar on “Annihilation of Caste” at Indian Institute of Advanced Study,beginning here on Monday The Seminar will be inaugurated by Chairman,Governing Body of the IIAS and Rajya Sabha member B L Mungekar. Spokesperson of the institute,Ashok Sharma said the experts will delve into different aspects of the caste system.

Pensioners serve ultimatum to govt

SHIMLA: The Pensioners Welfare Association — the main representative body of retired government servants — on Sunday served a one month ultimatum to the government to decide on all pending issues of the pensioners failing which they will take to the streets. The Association members claim that despite Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal’s announcement to grant full benefits to pensioners on the lines of Punjab government nothing has been done for three years.

PPCB trains 500 brick kiln firemen

PATIALA: The Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) has trained over 500 firemen working at the various brick kilns in the state,over the past week. In a press statement on Sunday,PPCB chairman Kahan Singh Pannu said that there were about 2500 brick kilns in the state and firemen who poured the coal as fuel were the backbone of these kilns.
