The seven-member flood assessment committee formed by the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) national president Nitin Gadkari to conduct a survey in the flood-hit areas of Punjab and Haryana, found many irregularities in relief measures being provided. It was found that no efforts were being made to clean the underpasses which carry water. This resulted in overflowing of water into the agricultural lands and surrounding villages.
The committee will submit its report to the BJP president after visiting all the areas.
Committee chairman and senior BJP leader Suresh Chandel told The Indian Express that the team visited Sangrur,Patiala,Fatehgarh Sahib,Ludhiana, and other flood-affected areas and found that people were not getting portable water, fodder for cattle, required medicines in various parts. There was no immediate relief for repairing houses as well. He said the NGOs were much ahead in providing the relief to the people than the government. He said the state government should seriously plan long term and short term flood management measures. Also, the underpasses should be cleaned before the onset of the monsoons in the state,he added.
Another senior BJP leader Sukhminder Pal Singh Grewal,a member of the committee, said the Dhussi Bandh in Ghaggar was not repaired at various places which led to breaches.
