Birender Singh had then said that he would leave the BJP if it continued an alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala in Haryana.
Hisar BJP MP Brijendra Singh, the son of former Union minister Chaudhary Birender Singh, on Sunday announced he has resigned from the saffron party. A few minutes after his announcement on X, Brijendra Singh reached the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in New Delhi to join the grand old party.
Brijendra quit the Bharatiya Janata Party nearly five months after Birender Singh gave an ultimatum to the party at a rally in Jind in October 2023. Birender Singh had then said that he would leave the BJP if it continued an alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) of Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala in Haryana.
In a post on X on Sunday, Brijendra Singh said: “I have resigned from the primary membership of BJP due to compelling political reasons. I extend gratitude to the party national president Sh. JP Nadda, Prime Minister Sh. Narendra Modi, & Sh. Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve as the member of parliament for Hisar.”
Sources close to Birender Singh said he may also join the Congress later by holding a rally just as he had done in 2014 before changing sides to the BJP. Birender Singh, who had joined the BJP after leaving Congress ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha election, was sent to the Rajya Sabha and also appointed a Union minister.
Birender Singh is the maternal grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram, who enjoys great respect among farmers for his decisions in the favour of the agriculturists during the British era. He had led the state Congress twice as president of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee.
