The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday alleged that illegal mining worth over Rs 1,000 crore is taking place every year in the Majri block of Kharar assembly constituency in Mohali district. The party claimed that though government records show no notified mining site in the area, several acres of land have been excavated up to 50 feet deep.

Addressing reporters after a visit to Kubaheri village, BJP state media head Vineet Joshi said that the link road between Kubaheri and Khizrabad had been damaged due to unchecked mining. He said villages including Khizrabad, Kubaheri, Abhipur, Mianpur and Mirzapur were witnessing extensive illegal extraction of sand and gravel, leading to environmental degradation and hardship for local residents.

Joshi was accompanied by Majri Mandal president Mohit Gautam and other party workers.

He alleged that despite the Mining Department acknowledging in its records that the link road had been damaged due to mining activity, no action had been taken by the Mining, Panchayat, Rural Development or Mandi Board departments, or by the district administration.

Joshi further claimed that 25 to 30 stone crushers in the area were operational only at night. “If these units are inspected during the day, most of them would be found closed. Their actual operations take place in the dark. If inspections are conducted as per rules, not one crusher will be found compliant,” he said.

He alleged collusion between the mining operators and officialdom at, enabling the units to obtain permissions and subsequently violate environmental and noise pollution norms. He added that crushers are required to maintain a three-layer green cover around their premises, but this was not being followed.

Joshi alleged that orders of the National Green Tribunal on illegal mining were being ignored. “If the police, Mining Department, Pollution Control Board and district administration were functioning impartially, mining on this scale would not be possible,” he said.
