British dancer Emma Bellerby is in town to teach kids her brand of freewheeling dance

British dancer Emma Bellerby does not believe in set moves when she takes to the dance floor. It’s probably the reason why,at her workshop she encourages kids to let the music guide their movements, telling them to draw their inspiration from unusual props — imagination, feelings and memory — and make improvisations along the way. “I give them a starting point,a simple direction and they pick things up from there,’’ smiles the pretty dancer,in Chandigarh for two months,to work with PAUSE,an educational module for children emphasising on making friends with feelings.

Bellerby, who trained in contemporary dance and choreography at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds,is now studying for a BA in Dance Education through the Royal Academy of Dance,London. Having taught creative movement classes in the UK and in Austria, coming to India has been a dream come true for the artiste. “The varied cultural influences add to my repertoire,” she smiles, talking about how her form of choreography is abstract, but fluid. “It allows children to think out-of-the-box and use patterns and abstract ideas as clues. When I see a child who has so much energy and an imagination to match,I think why should they be pigeon-holed into one genre of dance or another,’’ she wonders aloud.

Her workshop, thus,is open to both boys and girls,of all age groups. The bi-weekly classes encourage kids to make friends and enjoy their fun time. “I create an environment where choreography becomes a natural process, allowing children to shed any inhibitions and concentrate purely on linking movement to meaning,’’ she smiles.

Classes will begin from April 17.
