Rohini Hattangadi on her constantly evolving roles in TV serials

A television serial should end when the story stops entertaining the audience,” says Rohini Hattangadi, veteran of several movies and TV series. “There used to be a time when a serial used to complete its run in 13 or 26 episodes. This kept the audience glued to their television sets. But nowadays,it depends on the producer, channels and the preferences of the audience,” she says, set to return on Doordarshan with Karmyudh.

“Karmyudh is the story of a young, dynamic politician named Yashwant Chauhan and his police officer wife Shivangi. They love each other but have different ideologies. I play the role of Yashwant’s mother who supports her children in times of need and stands by truth. If I have to choose between my son and his wife,I always support his wife as I believe she is dedicated and sincere when it comes to her work,” says Hattangadi.

But will the audiences relate and respond to the unconventional storyline? “The audience will definitely like this serial as the story is realistic and very different from the usual fare on TV. Karmyudh is aptly named as well,as it will depict characters who are either giving in to or standing up against injustice,” she adds.

Hattangadi loves acting in comedy serials. “I have a sense of humour and enjoyed playing the role of Daku-amma in the serial Gunwale Dulhaniya le Jayenge. Another comedy I acted in was Lo Ho Gayi Pooja is Ghar Ki. My roles in movies like Chaalbaaz,Jalwa and a few Marathi movies had the audience in splits.”

Meanwhile,Hattangadi is busy doing a show on ETV Marathi called Char Diwas Sasu Che which has made it to the The Limca Book of World Records for airing 2,250 episodes successfully. “I cannot believe I’ve acted in that serial for the past nine years,” she laughs out.

Hattangadi’s son Asim too has taken to acting. “Asim has done English theatre with Naseeruddin Shah and his group,Hindi theatre with Makarand Deshpande and Marathi theatre with me. He is a hardworking actor— I am not saying this just because he is my son but as an actor and spectator. The way he is working right now,he is sure to become a successful actor in the future.” Mum’s the word.
