Special officer to act as bridge between institute and Union Health Ministry

In a significant development, the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, who also happens to the be the chairman of the governing body, has appointed an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to look after the affairs of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER).

According to sources,Yogesh Sawhney,a Congress leader from Jammu and Kashmir, has been appointed as the OSD of ministry of health to PGI. Sources said that he joined PGI on February 4. Known to be sharing close proximity to the Union Health Minister,Sawhney will be based in PGI and will act as a representative of Azad in PGI for smooth functioning of the institute.

This is the second time that such an appointment has been made. Earlier, during the NDA regime, when Sushma Swaraj was the then Health minister,a similar appointment was made. What raises eyebrows is that while for every appointment, the approval is taken from the governing body,in this case the appointment has been done directly.

Sources said that Sawhney has been entrusted with the responsibility of acting as a bridge between the PGI administration and the union health ministry, which has a direct control over the functioning of the institute.
