ASI caught while accepting bribe to register case

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Mohali police was caught taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 by the Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday.

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Mohali police was caught taking a bribe of Rs 20,000 by the Vigilance Bureau on Wednesday. ASI Shingara Singh, who is posted at the Kharar City police station, was arrested for allegedly demanding a bribe for registering a case in a dowry-death case. A case has been registered against him at the Vigilance Bureau Flying Squad police station in Phase 8.

According to Superintendent of Police (Vigilance) Hargobind Singh, the bureau was approached by one Avtar Singh, who complained that ASI Shingara had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 to register a case of dowry-death against the sister-in-law of the victim in the case. The bureau nabbed the ASI red-handed while accepting the bribe from Avtar in the afternoon. He had allegedly demanded Rs 45,000 initially, but then had settled on Rs 25,000. The complainant alleged that Rs 5,000 had already been paid to the ASI earlier.

On October 14,a 24-year-old woman,Tejinder Kaur, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her house in Bhukri colony in Kharar,in a suspected case of suicide by consuming poison. Her brother had alleged foul play and said that his sister was being constantly harassed for dowry by her in-laws,which forced her to end her life. On his complaint,a case had been registered at the Kharar City police station against Tejinder’s husband Kuldeep Singh, and her in-laws Mahinder Singh and Malkeet Kaur. However,no case was registered against her sister-in-law even though Avtar alleged that she was the prime suspect.
