BJP lodges complaint against Mirwaiz

Satinder Singh,general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Chandigarh unit,has filed a criminal complaint against Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and International Democratic Party leaders Kheta Singh and Karnail Singh. The complaint under Sections 53-A,153-B,124-A,323,505,506,34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 3 of Prevention of damage to Public Property Act has been moved in the court of Sunil Kumar,Judicial Magistrate,First Class. On November 25 last year,separatist leader Mirwaiz was in the city for a seminar. A ruckus was created at the venue when some members of the BJP confronted Mirwaiz and the organisers. Singh said Mirwaiz’s speeches were anti-national as he openly favoured separatist forces in the Valley by demanding that Kashmir be handed over to them. Singh accused Kheta Singh and Karnail Singh of manhandling him when he had asked the Hurriyat leader to stop making anti-national remarks.

Nurses call for strike on March 7

The Union Territory Nursing Staff Union,General Hospital,Sector 16,and Government Medical College and Hospital Nurses Welfare Association,Sector 32,held separate general body meetings on Thursday and decided to go on strike on March 7. The associations claim that their long standing demands pertaining to implementation of Central pay scales and problems of staff shortage had been neglected.

Winter school on nanotechnology at NIPER

A five-day winter school on ‘Nanotechnology in Advanced Drug Delivery’ began at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) on Thursday. According to Dr Sanyog Jain,Assistant Professor and convener of the winter school,the emphasis was on encouraging and motivating young talent to pursue studies in areas of nanotechnology and drug delivery. The fourth winter school was inaugurated by Lalit M Bharadwaj,Scientist and Additional Director,Central Scientific Instruments Organisation.

Radiotherapy,oncology course from March 5

The Department of Radiotherapy & Oncology at PGIMER is organising the first AROI-ESTRO Teaching Course from March 5-8. ESTRO (European Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology) and the Association of Radiation Oncologists of India (AROI) have decided to come together to educate and train professionals in radiotherapy and oncology. Dr S C Sharma,head of the Department of Radiotherapy,said more than 100 delegates of radiation oncologists and medical physicists would participate in the teaching course.

HSLA protests in Chandigarh

The Haryana School Lecturers Association staged a sit-in at the rally ground in Chandigarh to protest against the grievances that have not been addressed. Association president Kitab Singh Mor said the state government had been unable to pay their salaries for the last six months. Singh said if the government continued to ignore their legitimate demands,the school lecturers would proceed on mass casual leave on March 10 and boycott the forthcoming board examinations.

Bhavan Vidyalaya holds prize distribution

The Annual Prize Distribution function of the Bhavan Vidyalaya Junior wing was held on Thursday wherein meritorious students of the school were felicitated for their outstanding performances in various fields such as academics,literary events and cultural activities. The chief guest,R K Saboo,chairman,Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan,Chandigarh Kendra,gave away the prizes to the winners.

Schoolboys share space with cricketers

It was a dream come true for the cricket team of Saupin’s School,Sector 32,winners of the mini-world cup,as they shared the ground with the South African and Netherlands cricket teams before the match began. The boys held the flags of South Africa,Netherlands and the ICC. They also sang the national anthems of the respective teams. “It was a proud moment,” said Nipun,a member of team.

Conference on education held

The Government College of Education,Chandigarh organised a two-day University Grants Commission (UGC) sponsored national conference on “Excellence in Knowledge to meet the Challenges of the 21st Century”. Delegates presented papers on various key issues including increasing India’s competitive advantage in the field of knowledge,building excellence in the educational system and the need to promote information and communication technology (ICT) in education.
