MC to rent out AC fish,meat market booths
Municipal Corporation has decided to rent booths at the AC Fish and Meat Market. The decision was taken in a meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee held recently. The need to rent out the booths was felt as the auctions organised in the past had flopped. The market was set up in Sector 41 with an aim of provide a hygienic place to purchase fish and meat. It was constructed by the UT Administration and then handed over to the Municipal Corporation to auction the booths. However,as the reserve price ranging from Rs 37.50 lakh to Rs 77.50 lakh of the booths was very high,it did not find any takers.
Student abducted in Mohali
Abhishek Reddy,a student of computer engineering at Thapar University in Patiala,was reported missing from his residence in Sector 66 since Friday afternoon. Apprehending that her son has been abducted,Sharmila Reddy lodged a complaint to the Phase XI police station on Saturday. She has named one of Abhisheks friends to be the main accused behind the alleged kidnapping. According to Sharmila,Abhishek and his friend were involved in some financial dispute. The accused,however,had denied being involved in the case.
Man killed over land dispute
The son of an ASI,Praveen Kumar,was allegedly murdered on Saturday with sharp-edged weapons by his relatives at village Majri on the Ambala-Hissar road. The incident took place when Praveen was on his way to the court in connection with an ongoing land dispute case against the accused. In the morning,the accused attacked Praveens house,injuring his wife and brother Pradeep. They then followed Praveen to the court and killed him. A case of murder has been registered against the unidentified assailants,said DSP Raj Kumar Walia.
Punjab gets first multi-brand superstore
Mahindra First Choice Wheels Ltd a multi-brand pre-owned car company opened its multi-brand pre-owned car superstore in Industrial Area at Phase IX on Saturday. Rajeev Dubey,president (Group HR & After-Market) and member of the Group Executive Board of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd,inaugurated the new superstore. The store,which will display a wide range of cars,will offer an array of services under one roof,including purchase and sale of pre-owned cars,car finance and insurance,fitment of car accessories and assistance with paperwork and documentation in a comfortable ambience.
AFT fines DPDO Pathankot of Rs 1 lakh
The Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on Defence Pension Disbursing Office (DPDO) in Pathankot for delaying the arrears of a disabled soldier. Hari Singh,a resident of Pathankot district,had to leave the Army in 1987 as he was suffering from paralysis. He was recruited in 1966. In May 2009,the government revised the constant attendance allowance from Rs 600 to Rs 3000 with effect from January 1,2006. Though Hari Singh began receiving the revised allowance from July 2009,he did not get his arrears. Even Army Headquarters,Prinipal Controller of Defence Accounts (Pension) wrote to Pathankot DPDO to release the arrears. In December 2010,Hari Singh approached AFT. In January,DPDO paid him the arrears. However,the court has ordered that the fine will be recovered from the salary of officers responsible for the delay in the payment of his arrears.
Provide justice to needy: Judge to lawyers
Punjab and Haryana High Court Justice Jasbir Singh urged budding lawyers on Saturday to provide justice to the needy and downtrodden sections of the society. He said this after declaring open Checkmate-2011 a national moot court competition organised by the Army Institute of Law at its campus in Sector 68. Around 30 teams from leading law colleges across the country will participate in the competition. While the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds were held on Saturday,the semi-finals and finals will be held on Sunday.
