NSUI members protest outside PU

The National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Friday held a three-hour protest outside the gates of PU. A large number of NSUI activists participated in the demonstration,which was mainly aimed to protest against the non-implementation of the Lyngdoh Commission recommendations. NSUI state president Gobind Khatra accused the police of trying to forcibly stop the agitation,following orders from the ruling Akali-BJP regime.

OBC to celebrate doctors’ week

Oriental Bank of Commerce will celebrate “Doctors’ Week” from February 26 to March 4 as a part of its “Reach Out to Customers” programme launched on the occasion of its foundation day. During the week,bank’s officials,all over the country,shall visit hospitals and clinics in their areas to market deposit and loan products of the bank.

SboP launches financial inclusion scheme

Now villagers can open their accounts,even with zero balance (no-frill accounts) and can deposit/withdraw money through biometric smartcards at their doorsteps without travelling to a bank’s branch. The State Bank of Patiala on Friday inaugurated a business correspondence outlet at village Roorkee as a financial inclusion initiative to reach out to villages and provide banking services at their doorstep.

‘Bomb’ creates panic in Zirakpur

A firecracker,which was supposed to be a live bomb,created panic in Zirakpur on Friday. It was found on a rickshaw-rehri — the roadside near Patiala Chowk on Chandigarh-Ambala National Highway-21. When the police tried to defuse it,it turned out to be a firecracker,said SHO Yogi Raj.

Newborn girl found abandoned

A newborn girl,found at a garbage dump in Phase XI in Mohali on February 13,was handed over to the Mohali administration by GMCH-32 in Chandigarh,where she was taken from the spot. Sources said some residents found the baby dumped amid garbage and she was rushed to GMCH-32.

Man booked for immigration fraud

A resident of Phase 3B2 in Mohali,Tarun Katial,was booked for allegedly running an immigration racket,the police said on Friday. Kulwant Rai of Morinda in Ropar lodged a complaint with the police alleging that he and one Babu Ram had paid Rs 5.54 lakh to Katial for sending their sons to the US. “Neither our sons went abroad nor we got our money back,” said Rai.

One held with 143 liquor boxes

The police arrested Sarwan Singh,a resident of a Bilaspur village in Himachal Pradesh,and seized 143 boxes of illicit liquor from the truck that he was driving. Following a tip-off,a police team intercepted the truck and seized the boxes meant for sale in Chandigarh only. The liquor was being smuggled to Himachal,said police.

JE assaulted by lineman

A junior engineer (JE) of Punjab State Power Corporation Limited — posted in Kharar — was assaulted and left seriously injured by his subordinate lineman,Narinder Singh. Malkiat Singh was admitted in critical condition to Chandigarh PGIMER. “ Narinder Singh was not reporting to duty since February 2 and I had reported the same to the higher authorities,which probably was why I was assaulted,” he said.

140 students get placed in job fest

Govt College at Sector 1 on Friday organised Job Fest 2011,where 140 students got placed. About 500 students appeared in the fest,where 10 companies participated. They included HDFC,Met Life,SBI Life,3M Advertisers and Promoters,Indo-Swift Corporation and Tech Mahindra.

Death by accident: Chargesheet filed

The UT Police on Friday filed a chargesheet in the district court pertaining to an accident that had led to the death of V N Singh,nodal officer of Le Corbusier Centre. Singh had sustained serious injuries after his scooter was hit by a car in Sector 7 on November 28. In a coma for several days,he died on December 9. Singh was hit by a car driven by Baljot Singh — a resident of Sector 7.
