Hearing resumes in Nari Niketan case

CHANDIGARH: During the resumed hearing of Nari Niketan rape case,the defence on Wednesday cross-examined Inspector Uday Pal. The cross examination will continue on Thursday. The mentally-handicapped rape victim had identified all the accused – Bhupinder Singh,Jamuna Parsad,Kamla,Vijender and Maya of Nari Niketan and Naresh,Bhagwandeep,Davinder and Chotu of Ashreya in Chandigarh district court. The victim was raped during her stay in Nari Niketan. Later,she was shifted to Sector 47-based Aasherya,a home for mentally-disturbed persons. She was found pregnant on May 16,2009 by Aasherya authorities. The UT administration had moved the High Court seeking termination of pregnancy. While the High Court had ordered so,the Supreme Court had set aside the judgement. The victim gave birth to a girl child in December 2009.

Two arrested for sexual harassment

Panchkula: Two youth were beaten by residents of Sector 15 and were handed over to police for sexually harassing girls. According to a complaint,some boys used to come to their locality and allegedly passed lewd remarks on girls. On Wednesday at about 7 pm,Ranjit Singh and Vipanpreet Singh came in car and allegedly started passing offensive remarks on girls. They were apprehended by the people and bashed them up,but one fled in the car. Police followed him and caught him near Harmilap Nagar. Both claim to be students of Class XII of AC National School of Zirakpur.

Snatching gang busted by police

Chandigarh: The Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police on Tuesday arrested three persons allegedly involved in an auto theft and snatching at Kaimwala on the evening of August 7. Police said those arrested had a criminal record and were also being investigated for the recent incidents of snatchings – wherein the auto rickshaw drivers attacked their own passengers or passersby. Those arrested in the auto robbery at Kaimwala by the police have been identified as 21-year-old Balbir Singh of Kanckabara,Mohali,Singhra Singh alias Vicky Singh (23) of Adarsh Nagar,Mohali and 22-year-old Sanjeev alias Sanju of Nada Pind,Mohali.

HUDA carries out anti-encroachment drive

Panchkula: Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) carried out anti-encroachment drive in slums adjoining Sector 3 on Wednesday amidst heavy police presence. The slums from Majri Chowk to Devi Nagar were removed amid protest. Five JCB machines were used to clear the slums. There were three gas godowns in the area,which was also directed to vacate the area which will be demolished at a later date.

Physics teacher returns from space academy

Chandigarh: Back from Alabama,USA,after attending Space Academy Program Harleen Singh,a physics teacher at the Yadavindra Public School,Mohali,is all set to implement new ways of teaching at school. Whether it is the use of simple dice games to teach students maths or to assist them to make dummy rockets out of bottles by using simple rules of physics. “I learnt them as a part of Honeywell Educators at Space Academy Program. A program that is designed to hone professional skills of maths and science teachers from across the world and is held in partnership with US Space and Rocket Centre,” said Singh,who was one of only four from the country to be selected. “Selected after a series of tests,the program had 250 teachers from 27 countries and 47 states of US and taught us how to supplement teaching techniques practised all around the world,” Singh said the fully sponsored program saw them participate in 45 hours of intensive classroom,laboratory and astronaut style training and simulations.

Two arrested for dowry death

Panchkula: The police on Wednesday arrested two persons for dowry death. Parmila,hailing from Delhi,got married to Vidya Kumar in 2006. On the morning of August 16,she was found dead at her in-laws house. On the complaint of his father Nand Lal,the police registered a case against Kumar and his father Chander Bhushan under Section 304 B ( for dowry death).
