Man dies in road accident; two bodies found in Ambala
Ambala: One person died in a road accident while two bodies,including that of a woman,were found at different places of the district in the past 24 hours. Som Nath was killed when he was run over by an unidentified vehicle while crossing the Ambala-Chandigarh road on Sunday night. The police have registered a case against the unidentified driver. Meanwhile,bodies of a young woman and a middle-aged person were recovered from Sarangpur village on the Ambala-Hisar highway. The police have registered a case.
MC earns Rs 57 lakh from liquor vends
Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation has collected a total of Rs 57 lakh in the past three days from the liquor vend owners. The MC House had given 48-hour deadline to the vend owners to clear their dues. Teams of the enforcement staff of the civic body had been formed to collect revenue. Of the 21 defaulters,12 have cleared their dues completely. The remaining have made partial payments and have asked for some extension to pay the rent. A decision on whether some extension can be given is likely to be taken by tomorrow.
Personal contact programme from Nov 8
Chandigarh: The Personal Contact Programmes for BCom-I (for Chandigarh boys and girls) having enrolment number 1 to 1000 will be held from November 8 to 13,and for the outstation students having enrolment numbers above 1000,the Personal Contact Programmes will be held between January 31 to February 5,2011,said the Chairperson,University School of Open Learning,Panjab University.
Punjabi University postpones exams
Patiala: Punjabi University,Patiala,has postponed the examinations of Punjabi compulsory and Punjab History and Culture papers of BCA-II which were scheduled to be held on November 3,2010,due to administrative reasons. These papers will now be held on November 4,2010. Giving this information,Controller of Examinations,Dr Pawan Kumar Singla said that the time and centre of examinations of these papers,however,will remain the same.

Chandigarh: Dr Bhupinder Singh Brar,Professor of Political Science at the Panjab University,today took over the key charge of Dean University Instructions (DUI) from Prof S C Vaidya. Prof Brar is also the Dean Research of the University currently,as well as Honorary Director of the Indian Council of Social Science Research for the northwest India. Professor Brar has had held positions of co-ordinator of the UGC Special Assistance Programme as well as coordinator of the Centre for Defence and National Security Studies at Panjab University.
City professor presents paper in USA
Chandigarh: Sangam Kapoor,Associate Professor,Department of Commerce,Post Graduate Government College for Girls,Sector 11,was invited by the International Academy of Business and Economics,USA,to present her research paper in the annual conference held at Las Vegas,Nevada,USA from October to 17-20,2010. More than 450 participants and resource persons participated in the four-day conference. The topic of her paper was Corporate Social Responsibility- Emerging Markets with special reference to India. In her paper,Kapoor highlighted the current CSR scenario in India. She related the conventional CSR practices of Indian corporate sector with the deep-rooted philanthropic ideology of Indians in general.
IISER holds workshop on astronomy
Mohali: THE Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER),Mohali,in collaboration with Punjab State Council for Science and Technology (PSCST) on Monday began a three-day workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics. Prof S. Ananthakrishnan,former Professor and Director of Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT),inaugurated the workshop. Prof Ananthakrishnan stressed upon the need to join this field as India require a large number of scientists in this area. He deliberated on the various existing and upcoming observatories in the country. He explained the scientific principles involved in the design of these observatories. He also shared the information that GMRT is an excellent piece of attraction for the foreign scientists and scientists from more than 25 countries have so far visited/used this facility and that too quite often.
Punjabi University Media Centre to tie-up with Pennsylvania varsity
Patiala: The Punjabi Universitys Centre for Advanced Media Studies (CAMS) has got a shot in the arm with a delegation from the highly acclaimed Wilkes University,Pennsylvania,agreeing to enter into a collaborative venture with it. In an interaction with its director,Gurmeet Singh Maan,during her visit to CAMS,Linda A Winkler,Dean of Arts,Humanities and Social Sciences,Wilkes University,expressed earnest desire to work together to explore varied horizons in respect to mediascapes of the two countries vis-à-vis their cultural landscapes. In a written communication to Dr Maan,Dr Linda has said it will be exciting opportunity for faculty and students to attend each others university and learn from each other. Dr Eric Ruggiero,Director,Integrative Media,Wilkes University,on the other hand,has said that there were many positive layers within this kind of learning experience.
