RTE Act: Schools get draft notification
Chandigarh: The UT education department circulated the draft Right to Education (RTE) notification among all school heads on Monday. It has invited all heads of recognised private schools and Pankaj Chandgothia,who had filed a PIL to ensure implementation of the Act,for a meeting on December 23. To be chaired by UT Home Secretary Ram Niwas,the meeting at Tagore Theatre will discuss implementation of the Act in UT. Chandgothia appreciated DPI (S) P K Sharma for taking his crusade in the right manner and hoped the meeting would go a long way in effective implementation of the RTE Act.
Awards for PGI professor,student
Chyandigarh: Prof Jagat Ram,an ophthalmologist at PGI,has been awarded the prestigious 7th Prof Narendera Swaroop Memorial Oration by Swaroop Eye Hospital and The Sushila Narendra Swarup Charitable Trust,Hyderabad,is in recognition of his outstanding work in the field of paediatric cataract surgery. Last week,he was honoured by the Vice-Chancellor of Chhatrapati Sahuji Maharaj Medical University,Lucknow,for his significant contribution in adult and paediatric cataract surgery. In another honour for PGI,Surendra Kumar Sharma,a PhD student of Prof S V Rana,Department of Gastroenterology,got the prestigious MGIMS award during the 37th annual conference of the Association of Clinical Biochemists of India,held in Mumbai last week. This award is given for the best paper in the field of tropical diseases.
DPS wins inter-school quiz
Chandigarh: Delhi Public School (DPS),Chandigarh,hosted the Inter-School Quiz on Germany on Monday. This quiz was one of the eight zonal-level rounds conducted all over the country by the DPS Society,in association with the Max Mueller Bhawan,New Delhi. The quiz aims to create interest in students and schools for German people,their language and culture. A large number of schools from Chandigarh and other cities of the north zone participated in the quiz and each was represented by a team of two Class IX students. The DPS-Chandigarh team emerged as the winners,while Bhavan Vidyalaya,Panchkula,finished second. The winning team will compete with seven other teams in the national-level finals at DPS-Noida on January 20.
Annual day celebrations at Saupins
Chandigarh: Spotlite got under way on Monday to mark the annual function of Saupins School,Sector 32. Students of the school presented various colorful dance items,dramas,songs and elocution. The two-day cultural show was inaugurated by chief guest Pradip Mehra,Adviser to the UT Administrator. The function began with a Ganesh Vandana,followed by a colorful dance performance by Class V students,depicting the union of Rajasthani and Haryanvi folk culture. Colours,a tableau by the students of Class VII,showed life as a kaleidoscope of colours. Saupins Dance Crew gave a scintillating performance,while the tiny tots of Class I enthralled the audience as moved and swayed to Bollywood tunes. A play,Beggars Bowl,was staged by senior students. Dance drama Jeevan Sangeet by Class III was an initiative to raise awareness against global warming. The show ended for the day with a Bhangra performance.
Refresher course in social sciences
Chandigarh: A refresher course in social sciences,organised by the Department of Political Science on behalf of the Academic Staff College (ASC) of Panjab University,concluded on Monday. As many as 48 assistant professors from colleges and universities from 11 states attended the course that began on November 30. The resource persons from diverse disciplines included Professors K Sivaramakrishnana,S S Gill,P S Judge,Ujjwal Singh,Sudha Wasan,Amit Prakash,Gopal Guru,Surinder Jodhka,Sudha Pai,N K Dogra,Sanjay Kumar and M N Thakur. Professor Ashutosh Kumar coordinated the course. In his valedictory lecture,Prof Shelley Walia,Director,ASC,spoke about the need to evolve social sciences in a manner that could not only be relevant but also transformative in nature. Prof Bhupinder Singh Brar,Dean University Instruction,PU,and Prof B S Ghuman,Dean,Arts,too,spoke on the occasion.
GGDSD alumni host Winter Ball-2010
Chandigarh: The GGDSD College Alumni Association,Chandigarh,hosted the annual Winter Ball-2010 in the lawns of Chandigarh Club on Friday. Nearly 300 old student of SD College attended the event. Principal A C Vaid was welcomed by association president Ranjeev Dahuja,vice-president Alok Jain and secretary R P S Khurana. The alumni honoured the 1984-85 batch for completing 25 years of their passing out from the institution. A souvenir,containing the details of approximately 250 members,was also released on the occasion. Out of the funds generated from the souvenir,a sum of Rs 51,000 was donated to the Chandigarh Breast Cancer Trust,a society affiliated to PGIMER,while another Rs 51,000 was donated to Avahan,an NGO of the college.
SRM ties up with NIIT
Chandigarh: On Monday,SRM Global entered into a collaboration with NIIT Limited for Global Partnership in Education and Skill Building for Enhanced Employability. Through this partnership,NIIT and SRM Global will jointly work towards creating an academic framework for attracting and creating a large base of skilled manpower for the information technology sector in the region.
PU Bhagyatara award to Hyderabad scientist
Chandigarh: Dr Ashwini Nangia of the School of Chemistry,University of Hyderabad,has been awarded the annual Panjab University Bhagyatara Award for the outstanding research carried out by him in chemistry. Panjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof R C Sobti presented him the award,which carries Rs 50,000 and a citation. Nangias research focused on natural product synthesis,enzyme inhibitors and synthesis of medicinal molecules. The award is given from the funds of Bhagyatara Educational Foundation. The awardee is selected by the Standing Committee on the basis of merit of his research work evaluated by a panel of experts from the nominations received from different universities and research institutions from all over India.
