Chandigarh Congress announces new office bearers

Chandigarh: The names of the office bearers of district Congress committee urban-1 were announced on Thursday at the Congress Bhawan,Sector 35. A total of 70 office bearers have been appointed and the committee has appointed 12 vice-presidents and general secretaries,26 secretaries and 19 executive members. Addressing a press conference president of the committee H S Lucky said the office bearers would start work in every block and ward. Issues that affect the people including traffic congestion,parking facilities,domicile not being made,etc would be taken up. President of Chandigarh Territorial Congress Committee B B Bahl said keeping in view the forthcoming elections of the Municipal Corporation effort would be made to ensure that 90 per cent of the seats in the civic body are won by the Congress.

Ex gratia to widow of fireman

Chandigarh: The Municipal Corporation on Thursday gave away Rs 3 lakh as ex gratia to the widow of Amarjit Singh Mavi who died while fighting fire in Sector 22 last year. Additional Commissioner TPS Phoolka visited the house of Mavi at Milk Colony,Dhanas along with M L Sharma,station fire officer and gave away the check. He also assured all possible help for getting job for Mavi’s son.

Student dies in road accident

Zirakpur: Twenty-year-old Harmanpreet Singh,a resident of Anand Vihar,Baltana,lost his life in a accident on the Zirakpur-Baltana road on Thursday. According to investigating officer Ramesh Kumar,the incident took place at around 12.30 pm near Preet Palace in Zirakpur. Harman was on his way home and an Army school coach hit his bike from the rear. He fell on the road and was crushed under the tyre of the truck,the investigating officer said. The victim was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32,where he was declared dead. The truck driver managed to flee from the spot leaving the vehicle behind,the investigating officer said. The driver of the Army vehicle who fled from the spot leaving his vehicle behind,has been booked after impounding the vehicle and hunt for him is on,said the police. Harmanpreet was a first year student at an engineering college of Sangrur and was the only child of his parents.

CDTS 3-day course for women police officers concludes

CHANDIGARH: The three-day course on self-development and conflict management for women police officers and paramilitary forces conducted at Central Detective Training School (CDTS),concluded on Wednesday. Around 100 officers attended the orientation course.

The topics discussed during the course included problems of working women and police officers in particular,how to overcome stress and strain in police work,self-motivation,problems of senior citizens and ways of helping them,sexual harassment at workplace,communication skills,self development and gender bias in law enforcement. former Director General,National Human Rights Commission,Sankar Sen had designed the course curriculum.

Biker mowed down in Kharar

KHARAR: Som Nath,aged around 50,a resident of Kajheri village in Chandigarh and working as peon with Water Supply and Sanitation Department in Mohali,was mowed down by a recklessly driven tractor-trolley on busy Kharar-Mohali stretch of National Highway-21 in Kharar this evening. The accident took place around 6 pm when Nath was heading towards Kharar after attending his office and as he reached near Mundi Kharar,a speeding tractor-trolley,coming from behind,in a bid to overtake some other vehicle moving ahead of it,hit his motorcycle,following which Nath fell on the highway and sustained serious head injury. Till he was rushed to Civil Hospital,he succumbed to his injuries. The absconding tractor-trolley driver was booked for causing death by rash and negligent driving.
