Another robbery bid in broad daylight

While the Chandigarh Police is already facing the city resident’s fury on the blatant display of its incompetence in dealing with the Khushpreet kidnap-murder case.

Man stabbed in neck; cops first dismiss it as accident, register case only after traders block Dakshin Marg

While the Chandigarh Police is already facing the city resident’s fury on the blatant display of its incompetence in dealing with the Khushpreet kidnap-murder case, another broad daylight robbery in Sector 33 this morning at the busy Dakshin Marg has left the city police red-faced. The assailants could only attack a young man and could not take away cash. Despite the messages flashed by the Control Room, the assailants could neither be identified nor nabbed.

Two persons Narinder and Rajinder, both working in in a computer shop Microcom in Sector 20,were going to deposit cash of Rs 8 lakh at the South Indian Bank branch in Sector 22. According to Rajinder, when they approached the Sector 33 petrol pump, three youngsters forcibly stopped them on the road by blocking their way with a rod. Before they could understand anything, the youths tried to snatch away the bag from them. When the two resisted, one of the assailants attacked Narinder with a sharp-edged weapon, which hit him in the neck and he started bleeding profusely. Narinder still did not leave the bag carrying cash. Since it is a busy road,passers-by too witnessed the scene and gathered at the spot. At this, the youngsters sped away in an open jeep which was parked near the Sector 33 petrol pump. According to eyewitness Rajinder, there were five youngsters who sped away in the open jeep. He could not note down its registration number.

The Police Control Room was informed about the incident and the open jeep, but the police could not nab the assailants or trace the jeep. Narinder, who is a resident of Mohali, was admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32,from where he was discharged late in the evening. He received 18 stitches on the neck.

According to the Sector 20 traders, the Chandigarh Police kept on dismissing it as an accident till late evening. The Sector 20 traders then shut down the entire market and protested against the officials of UT Police. Incidentally, this case too falls in the jurisdiction of same police station-34,which is in the dock for mishandling the Khushpreet case.

“When the assailants were trying to snatch away the bag from Narinder on the road,a Maruti Zen which was approaching the scene of the crime on the main road hit Narinder. Now the police are dismissing the entire case as that of an accident. How could a car which had rammed a man in the legs leave a 1-inch deep wound in his neck? The cops police are trying to force us to believe that it was an accident case, despite the fact that Rajinder is an eyewitness to the entire happening. We are shocked to see the Chandigarh Police’s behaviour”,said Amit Nanda,President of the Sector 20 Computer Traders’ Association.
