Effigy-burning,rallies take place for second day; politicians rush to join civil society movement
Effigy burning,vehicle rallies and sloganeering were witnessed for the second day as supporters of Anna Hazare took to the streets. Openly flouting Section 144 imposed by the UT Administration throughout the city,groups of protesters indulged in sloganeering and held rallies. Lawyers of the High Court refrained from work after lunch.
The movement received support from different quarters including political parties,civil society groups,NGOs,students and traders. Protests were witnessed in Panchkula and SAS Nagar.
Even as the civil society groups and NGOs continued their protests,political parties actively jumped into the fray. The protest at the rally ground in Sector 25 continued with a group of people being on chain hunger strike.
The Lions Welfare Society too continued its chain hunger strike. Representatives of voluntary organisation Awaaz stood at the Sector 18/7 roundabout with flags and posters of Hazare and attracted the attention of commuters on the busy route. Later in the evening,candles were lit near the roundabout by the group.
The city unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) burnt an effigy near the bus stand at Sector 17. Meanwhile,effigies of Union ministers Kapil Sibal and Pawan Kumar Bansal and Congress spokesman Manish Tewari were burnt by Lions Welfare Society members at the Sector 29/ 31 roundabout.
The police maintained a vigil at the residences of the Union ministers in the city.
The protesters rued that despite being from the city,they failed to convey the feelings of the people on the Lokpal Bill to the Centre.
The Bharatiya Janata Partys (BJP) city unit held a protest at Sector 17,at which party leaders and workers raised slogans against the murder of democracy by the Congress. A candle light march was also held by the protesters.
A protest was also witnessed at Panjab University (PU) by members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). The members of Chandigarh Industrial Area Tenants Association and Chandigarh Industrial Youth Association held protests at the Sector 29/ 31 roundabout. A car rally was also held.
