A day after inviting the wrath of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for their “shoddy” investigation in the Nari Niketan rape case, the Chandigarh Police arrested Kamla,a sweeper in the institute, and security guard Jamna Kumar on Friday .

Bhupinder Singh, also a security guard at the Nari Niketan,is already under arrest for allegedly raping the 19-year-old mentally challenged resident. The girl is now pregnant.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Kulwant Singh Pannu, head of the Special Investigation Team constituted to probe the case, said: “We have arrested the two based on circumstantial evidence and verbal testimony.

“We will interrogate them to get more details of their role in the alleged rape.”

The accused were remanded in police custody for two days by the court of Additional Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Anshul Berry. While moving the application in court, the police said the duo’s interrogation might throw light on the circumstances under which the crime was committed.
