After the delay of over a year, work has started on the upgradation and beautification of Sector 17. It had come to a standstill after the contractor left it mid-way and no new contractor could be found. According to the proposal, the stretch from Bridge Market to Sector 9 would be developed on the lines of the Plaza.
As per plans, the flooring would be concretised and new streetlight poles would be installed. Fountains would also be installed.
The area would be landscaped by planting new saplings and seating arrangements would be provided. An amount of Rs 4.14 crore has been sanctioned for the plan. At present, this stretch looks quite neglected. Shop-owners had been complaining about the lack of facilities for a long time and had rued that despite Sector 17 being a commercial hub,not many people came to this particular side due to lack of facilities.
The proposal had been approved in February last year. Work had started, but the contractor left mid-way.
Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra said development work in the area would be completed soon. The area will no longer appear neglected. Earlier, there had been some problem with contractors. With that being solved, speedy development can be expected, he said.
