Summer breaks arent just for the kids! Culinary classes,jewellery design modules,radio jockeying workshops,camping trips…theres so much grown-ups in the city can pick and choose from
Forgive the cliche,but it is that time of the year again. The summer is getting cruel,vacations are around the corner and theres planning to do. If you are among those parents who dutifully line up creative options (read kiddie summer camps) to keep the little tykes at bay,you deserve a pat on the back. But this summer break,we urge you to take time out for yourselves. Even though the rising heat suggests you make the best of indoors,there are plenty of options for adults to pick and choose from in the city. You could,for instance,learn how to whip up Korean sushi; you could also try your voice at being an cool RJ and if jewellery was your first love,how about learning to design some of your own! So if you are looking for some adult fun,heres where to head:
COOK UP A SKILL: Its hot,spicy yet very healthy. This is probably the best way to describe Korean traditional cuisine in general. For the uninitiated,Koreans are proud of their diet,quite varied and full of nutrition. It is richly endowed with fermented foods,vegetables and grains,soups,teas,liquors,confectionery and soft drinks. Kimchi and doenjang paste made of soybeans are the best-known examples of Korean fermented foods and teaching you more about Korean fare will be Lee at Coveda in Sector 18. The four-day course (May 18 – 21) will give you a chance to learn Gimbab (Korean sushi roll),Duen Jang Guk (Bean Paste soup with vegetables),Kimchi (spicy Korean salad with cabbage) and more. The Chandigarh Institute of Hotel Management in Sector 42 is busy preparing short-course modules for all. Our baking and Continental cooking summer courses have been a great hit and this May will see us roll out some more, informs CIHM principal,T K Razdan. ALL THAT BLING: Ladies,this one should have you hooked. For those of you who have always wanted to design original baubles,then teaching you the skills is the Jewellery Design and Technology Institute in Sector 35. Whether you are a student,a homemaker,or a retired professional looking for a short summer break,you can choose from the various course options. We have rolled out a two-week summer course in costume jewellery where one can learn to design and make jewellery from a range of non-precious,natural and synthetic materials. Each student will receive a complete personal kit of working material, informs a JDTI,Sector 35 representative. You can also choose from another concise course,Introduction to Diamond Grading which would aim to educate the aspirants about the forever factor of diamonds,imparting theoretical and practical knowledge on various aspects of diamonds like their cut,colour,clarity and carat. Training would be provided on equipments,using an updated collection of diamonds and other gemstones. All the short-term courses begin on May 18.
TALK YOUR HEART OUT: If you have the gift of the gab and feel like honing your talkative skills then heres something of interest. The Institute of Radio Jockeying (IRJ) in Sector 35 is rolling out a summer workshop for adults in radio jockeying and communication skills. Its open for college students who have graduated or are still studying,working professionals and even homemakers, informs IRJs director S P Singh as he adds,The aim is to prepare students to be either a Radio Jockey,program producer,voice over artist,radio advertisement producer or stage anchor. The options are plenty. The course is of 40 days duration and while the timings for working professionals is 7.15 am to 9.15 AM,for others it is 3 pm to 5.30 pm. Classes for the working professionals batch is also conducted on Sundays. Practical training is an important part of the course. Every week a CD of their recordings will be given to every student and he or she will also get to anchor at least one radio show to be broadcast on All India Radio, informs Singh.
