The Green Warriors win the battle
After months of struggle and sticking to their post, the Green Warrior Campaign has finally succeeded in saving the beautiful Heritage Village site in Sector 26. The Chandigarh Administration has finally submitted an Affidavit to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on April 1 09,stating that there is no more plan for Civil Services Institute, and instead a Butterfly Park is being planned at the said site. The decision has been approved just two days back. The move came after the High Court issued a Notice to Chandigarh Administration in previous hearing, tells a very excited Dr Gaurav Chhabra whose half hour documentary on the same, called Green Warriors was used as a weapon to fight and create awareness on saving the bio-diversity. The Civil service officers institute being planned earlier would have ruined the serene environment of the place and caused a major environmental damage to the city. The Administration has now promised in the Affidavit that it would restrain from cutting any tree or obliterating the Beautiful Water body that exists on date at the site, adds the doc.
The campaign began in October 2008. Through video activism,Dr Chhabra managed to gather support from various institutes and schools in the Tricity. The main support in the campaign were the school kids and the staff along with recommendation letters from heads of the schools stating that the Heritage Village site is of educational importance and thus be saved, tells Dr Chhabra.
Whats next?Free the Open Hand Campaign – a short film to free the Open Hand Monument in Sector 1 for the citizens and realize the vision with which it was built by Le Corbusier. Were all ears and eyes.
