A New Hue

In its reworked avatar,Purple Rice mixes up the old with some new

It was once a quaint fine-diner tucked away in an alley in Sector 35. Despite its odd location and limited covers,Purple Rice climbed the popularity charts for many reasons. While Chinese eateries were still in plenty at the time (half a decade ago),Purple Rice was one of the few places to roll out an authentic Pan Asian fare that went beyond Manchurian curries. The menu brought in the likes of pad thai noodles, chicken satays,Thai curries and more. After a good run, which also included food festivals and culinary classes,Purple Rice hung up its boots early on.

But owner Vipul Dua was already contemplating a return. The reworked Purple Rice has recently opened doors and is now housed within Hotel Heritage,a stone’s throwaway from its previous location. The first thing one notices upon entering the restaurant is the openness of space and ample covers. True to its name, the purple hue follows you everywhere.

Also,in its new version,Purple Rice has shed any pretensions whatsoever of being a fine-dining restaurant. The feel is casual, almost café-like,and the menu is trimmed and tight. The Thai curries apart, popular dishes like Kung pao chicken, twin pepper chicken, crispy butter garlic fish have been retained and will please those who were frequent diners at the old place. We would, however, would have liked to see some variations from the usual. But speaking of fresh beginnings, the new Purple Rice stresses on quick service and do-it-yourself meals.

There’s a separate quick bowl menu, and after a sampling of a very filling Purple Rice Noodle Soup,we chose to have a bowl customised as well. The steward offers a form with a pick-and-tick format with the options that bring in everything from sauces to vegetables. Our quick bowl was delivered to the exact specifications. While presented as a meal in a bowl for one person, the portions are generous and will work well for two moderately hungry diners as well. The desserts will remind you of the former menu. We couldn’t resist ordering the chocolate spring rolls with ice cream, just what you need to wrap up a casual meal.
